THURSDAY'S PREP ROUNDUP: Sherwood girls soccer stays red-hot, posts 12th shutout of season

ALBANY — Sherwood hasn’t traditionally been known for soccer powerhouses.

That may be about to change.

The Lady Eagles are off to their best start in Jason Shultz’s eight years at 13-2-1 — and 12 of those wins have been shutouts.

Goalie Hannah Thompson did it again Thursday when she and her teammates blanked Tiftarea, 4-0, behind two goals from Kylee Harrod and one each from Aubri Hughes and Jordyn Paramore.

The Sherwood boys also won Thursday by the same 4-0 score to improve to 9-3.

Ben Williams recorded his third shutout of the season and reignning Herald Player of the Year T.J. Clay scored three goals to lead the Eagles.

William Orr also scored a goal for SCA, which plays Calvary at home on April 9, while the girls team isn’t back in action until next Friday during a round-robin tourney in Savannah.

WESTOVER GIRLS, BOYS SWEEP DOUGHERTY, 10-0: Steven Vaiculavich recorded the shutout and Kevin Vincente and Tanner Stumpe led the way with two goals apiece. The Patriots also got goals from Alfred Nwakwo, Dennis Turner, Hunter Choi, Steven Lopez, Derrell Roberts and Saraj Patel.

The girls also rolled as Nellie Young and Jasmine Young each scored twice, while Amie Loudermilk, Katie Brown, Hope Johnson, Abi Estrada, Alisa Ivanina and Deanna Miller each scored once. Brown added four assists, while Loudermilk had two.

The Westover boys are now 7-5-1 and 6-3 in Region 1-AAAA — the girls are 10-2 and 9-1. The teams won’t play again until April 15 when they host Dougherty.

DEERFIELD BASEBALL ROUTS RIVAL SOUTHLAND, 14-3: The Knights (7-4, 2-1) rolled to a key region win Thursday thanks to a huge lead-off home run by Kh’Ron McClain — his first of the year — as he finished 2-for-3 with a triple.
