ALBANY, Ga. -- William Price, former president and financial secretary of United Paperworkers International, was indicted by the Dougherty County Grand Jury Wednesday. The charge was theft by taking by a fiduciary.
While the wording of the indictment states that Price had misappropriated more that $25,000 between January 17, 2003 and May 7, 2009, officials say the amount taken may actually be in excess of $100,000.
Announcement of the indictment was delayed because Price was unaware the charge would be made, according to Dougherty County district attorney, Greg Edwards. The decision was made to have a bench warrant issued for Price's arrest and to try to locate Price before releasing the information.
Edwards said when Dougherty County deputies went to arrest Price, he was out of town on an unrelated trip. Price has since contacted the Sheriff's Office through his attorney, Edwards said, and has promised to surrender to law enforcement officials. As of press time, officials believe Price to be in Columbus, Ga, Edwards said.
