Man charged in accident that injures daughter

ALBANY, Ga. -- An Albany man faces various charges for crashing his SUV into the back of a tractor-trailer rig in East Albany, in the process causing injury to his young daughter.

Officials with the Georgia State Patrol say the rig was stopped at a traffic light on Clark Avenue at the intersection of Cordele Road around 8:30 p.m. Thursday when it was rear-ended by an SUV driven by Payton Allen Jr. According to the GSP, Allen was driving drunk.

The Albany Fire Department responded to the scene with four units, including a jaws-of-life special extrication tools designed to cut rapidly through wrecked vehicles or other metal obstructions. Both Allen and his 6-year-old daughter were trapped inside the SUV, said Deputy Fire Chief Ron Rowe.

"We had two separate crews working on the SUV, one for the driver's side and one for the passenger side," Rowe said.

Rowe said the crews were using new battery-equipped eDRAULICs tools to open the vehicle -- standard issue since February for all 11 department pumpers.

"We had the occupants out around three to five minutes faster than we would have with the old jaws," Rowe said. "It's critically important to free the victims quickly."

According to AFD reports, Allen appeared uninjured, but his daughter was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, apparently with severe injuries.

GSP officials say Allen was charged with DUI, causing severe injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane, endangerment of a child under 14 years of age by DUI, and a child safety restraint violation.
