Dea. Fred James Oliver, Sr was born November 23, 1927 in Morgan, Georgia to the late John and Rosa Oliver. He was the youngest of three children. He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother, Hattie Lee Proctor, and John Oliver, Jr.
He confessed his life to Christ at an early age and became a member of the Union Missionary Baptist Church in Morgan, Georgia. He served faithfully at Union until his health began to fail. He became a Deacon at the age of 18 in 1945. He served faithfully as a deacon for 68 years. Other affiliations at Union Baptist were Sunday School Superintendent, Choir President, and Chairman of the Deacon Board. He worked actively with the Home Missionary Baptist Association. His affiliations with the association were Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Executive Trustee Board, and Assistant Secretary. He served faithfully in these positions until his health failed.
Fred Oliver was a pillar in the educational realm. During his early childhood years he attended Morgan Elementary, Jr. High, and High School until 10th grade. He graduated from Madison High School (now Monroe High School) in Albany, Georgia. After graduation he attended Albany State University for two years until he was drafted in the U.S. Army. He served for two years. Returning to Albany State University he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary education. He then received his Certification of Supervision & Administration at Atlanta University. He continued his education by receiving his Masters of Science Degree and his Educational Specialist Degree in Administration at Tuskegee University. He worked in the Calhoun and Clay County school systems. He worked actively in the field of education for 51 years. He was a teacher, principal, supervisor, Head Start Coordinator, and assistant superintendent. He retired as Assistant Superintendent in Calhoun County.
Fred Oliver was a devoted Mason. He loved his affiliation with the organization, and he held many positions. He was a member of Edison Lodge #279 where he was Worshipful Master, Cuthbert District #13 where was on Past Master Council, Royal Arch Mason #30, where he was Past High Priest, Thronateeska Knight Templar #8, and Al Rakin Temple #142. He was a 32nd degree Mason. He also was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.
Fred Oliver was a faithful worker in the city, the county, and community. The city of Morgan which he loved so much, he served as Mayor for over 25 years. Under his administration he was instrumental in bringing the State Prison to the county. He was also a member of the NAACP, Family Connection Board, and The Retired Teachers Association where he served as Chaplin.
In 1955 he married Mary Eunice Green. He called her "My Lovely Wife." To their union three children were born. One preceded them in death; two children, Fred Jr. (Kay) Leary, Georgia and Patrice (Johnnie) St. Marys Georgia; a loving brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Robert Green (Estella); special memories are left to a lovely niece, Delois Sutton; six grandchildren; Dexter, Sequoyah, Fred, HI, Mark, Kennedy, L'Cinda; four great- grand children, one great greatgrandchild, a favorite cousin Mrs. Dicy Burkes. A special family and neighbor for 57 years: Mrs. Lossie Frost and family. Memories are also left to a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
