Former Georgia Tech star Joe Hamilton is set to re-join the Yellow Jackets' football staff after he dismissed five years ago for getting a DUI on campus.

ATLANTA — Five years to the day after he resigned following an on-campus arrest, Georgia Tech great Joe Hamilton was welcomed back to the Yellow Jackets football staff this week.

Hamilton, one of the most accomplished and charismatic players to wear the Tech uniform, has been hired to assist in the team’s recruiting efforts. Coach Paul Johnson made the news public through his Twitter account. It was Johnson who also accepted Hamilton’s resignation May 7, 2008, following Hamilton’s on-campus DUI arrest less than two weeks after Johnson had hired him to serve as a player personnel assistant.

“Welcome Joe Hamilton back to the flats to assist in recruiting,” Johnson wrote via his account. “Joe had a great career here, and I’m excited he is back.”

Hamilton has been seen on campus recently, including at Georgia Tech’s signing day ceremonies and also at the spring game April 19. He had not been retained on staff at Georgia State, where he first served as a recruiting intern for coach Bill Curry in 2010 and then as running backs coach for the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

As a player at Tech, Hamilton played 43 games that established himself as one of the greatest players in school history. He led the Yellow Jackets to a share of the 1998 ACC title as a junior and as a senior finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy and completed his career as the ACC’s all-time leader in total offense.

This is the guy who couldn't remember that it was 4th down and threw the ball out of bounds against UGA? Bonehead plays that lost the game TWO years in a row at the end of the 4th quarter?

Yeah, that will really help them Jackets.

Nope, Sis, you're thinking of Reggie Ball. Hamilton gave UGA fits when he played.

UGA knew Reggie as its 12th man on defense!

He was the only guy who could beat UGA... him and the great George Godsey haha. He's probably better now than any QB Tech has on its roster. I'd suit him up if they can finally get him eligible.

"A great career here"? How long has Paul Johnson been without oxygen?

Smoke weed...hit and run car accidents. Huge contributing factor for Tech having to forfeit almost three years worth of games because he was found to be ineligible (but they still played him)! And Tech is proud to have him back????? Incredible!

Hard to understand why Tech promotes itself as always having "higher standards"! What a joke.

Apparently they won't post my comments regarding his hit and run accident, smoking weed, and GT's deciding to play him while ineligible, causing Tech to have to forfeit almost three years of victories....

Improvement? I think not!
