BLAKELY -- Albert Sidney Newberry, Sr., (74) lost his thirteen year battle with cancer on Friday, May 17, 2013. Albert, the youngest of eight children born to the late John William Newberry and Nancy Bernice Johnson Newberry, was born January 27, 1939 in Early County.
Albert attended Arlington High School and ABAC. While at ABAC he found his first love , radio broadcasting. He began his career at WTIF in Tifton, moved to WDWD in Dawson and then to WBBK in Blakely. He developed a "radio voice" that served him on the radio as an emcee for civic events, as the Voice of the SGA Warriors and as the speaking parts for Church Cantatas. He found his second love, helping local farmers through the Southern Ag. Services and Helena Chemical Co. in Arlington, Ga. After retirement he designed an apparatus used to apply chemicals to peanuts.
Albert was a member of Arlington United Methodist Church in his early years and under the encouragement of Mrs. W.E. Bostwick, "Miss Lora", he became a state MYF officer. In later years he became a member of Leary United Methodist Church where the served as chairman of the Administrative Board. He also served Baker County as a volunteer EMT and Chairman of the DFCS Board.
Other than his parents, Albert was preceded in death by his brothers: John Olin Newberry, Jack William Newberry, Thomas Harlowe Newberry and Ashton Jon Newberry also by two sisters; Carolyn Newberry Melvin and Allene Newberry Eley.
He is survived by his wife Judith (Judy) Norton Newberry; 4 children: Eve Newberry Johnson and husband Johnny of Cumming, Ga., Albert Sidney Newberry Jr. and wife Lisa of Sugar Hill, Ga.; Ross Norton Newberry and wife Jennifer of Roswell, Ga. and by Nancy Newberry Melvin and husband Mark of Milford, Ga.. Albert was blessed by grandchildren who adored him; Hunter Floyd of Griffin, Sydney Raine Newberry and Katie Newberry of Sugar Hill; Cole and Austin Newberry of Roswell; Tyler Mallon of Cumming; Hannah and Haley Melvin of Leesburg and Isabella Kate Melvin of Milford.
Albert is also survived by a sister: Bernice Newberry Craft and two sisters-in-law: Ann Craft Newberry and Patricia Toole Newberry ; one brother-in-law: Earl Norton and wife Betsy. There are twenty-three nieces and nephews who adored him. He was one of those individuals who children adored.
Services were held at the Arlington United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM on Sunday, May 19, 2013 with Mr. Turner Bostwick and Rev. Jean Watson officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation was held on Saturday May 18, 2013 at Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are: T.E. Moye, Kent Sanders, Jim Perryman, Michael Hawke, Rick Kay, Dr. William Eley, Gene Melvin and Richard Johnson, Honorary pallbearers were members of his Sunday School Class and members of the Leary United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Arlington United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 416, Arlington Ga. in memory of his early years in the church or to Leary United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 336, Leary, Ga. in memory of his latter years.
