Spring Fest to make downtown debut Saturday

ALBANY, Ga. -- Memorial Day weekend is here and Downtown Albany is hosting its first Spring Fest on Saturday.

The Better Albany Group, Albany Convention & Visitors Bureau, Downtown Manager's Office, Flint RiverQuarium, Riverfront Bar-B-Q, and Thronateeska Heritage Center are coming together to host this first time event. From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Spring Fest will have food, activities for children and games, local artists set up with painting in the Art Park, and entertainment from The Levee School of Music. Admission to the festival is free.

The festival will be held in the 100 block of Pine Avenue, the Flint RiverQuarium parking lot and the Art Park on Pine.

In additional to Spring Fest, three businesses are offering specials for the Memorial Day weekend. The Flint RiverQuarium and Thronateeska Heritage Center are teaming up for a joint admission pass for $8 for the three-day holiday weekend.

The Flint RiverQuarium is open Saturday during Spring Fest, 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday. Thronateeska Heritage Center will be open Saturday during Spring Fest and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday.

Also the Albany Welcome Center will be offering a BOGO bike rental -- rent one bike get an additional one free. The Albany Welcome Center will be open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, noon-4 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday.

Next to Spring Fest will be the SB&T Bike Race Criterium. A part of the SRS Racing Series, the SB&T Bike Race is the first stop in the five-state race series. Race officials are expecting up to 300 race event registrants for the weekend.

This type of events are good. However, they don't replace structural development of employment opportunities that are sustainable.

I hope we can focus on bringing those type of opportunities to Albany too.
