Mary Elizabeth Middleton Shippey

BLAKELY -- Mary Elizabeth Middleton Shippey, 93, of Morgan, GA passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Pioneer Community Hospital of Early Co. in Blakely, GA. Visitation will be Saturday evening May 25 from 6-8 PM at Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home in Blakely, GA. Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 3 PM in the Chapel of Manry-Jordan-Hodges Funeral Home. Rev. Ed Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Morgan Cemetery, Morgan, GA.

Pallbearers will be: Aaron, David and Robby Stroud; Morgan Tindall; Kenny and Bobby Rush; Billy Blitch; and, Terry and Wilbur Etheridge.

Mrs. Shippey was born in Damascus, GA August 8, 1919 to the late Henry Connie Middleton and Mary Hill (Mamie ) Corley Middleton. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Morgan United Methodist Church. Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lovick Pierce (L.P.) Shippey Jr. and a sister, Winnie Christmas and by 2 brothers; H.A. (Zeke) Middleton and Edward Howard Middleton.

Mrs. Shippey is survived by 3 daughters: Annette Stroud of Columbus, GA, Mariwilla Tindall of Tallahassee, FL, and Connie Rush and husband Bob of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Also by a brother-in-law: Aubra Christmas of Atlanta, GA. 7 Grandchildren: Carmella Blitch and husband Billy, Aaron Stroud and wife Carrie, David Stroud and wife Jacie, Robby Stroud and wife McKenna, Morgan Tindall, Bobby Rush and Kenny Rush and wife Ashley and 8 Great-Grandchildren.

Mrs. Shippey was a 1938 graduate of Damascus High School. She married L.P. Shippey in 1940. During her life, Elizabeth served her community and church and supported her children 's school activities. She was the local cancer coordinator for many years. She worked at the voting polls for local and national elections and instilled in her family the importance of their freedom and right to vote. Elizabeth was a very enthusiastic Braves fan dating back to the 1960's. She blessed many people's lives by playing the harmonica. Mrs. Shippey was a woman of great faith, strength, and inspiration. She had a big heart and competitive nature. Her life revolved around her family and friends. She taught her children when you make a decision you do not look back.

Her daughters would like to thank the staffs at Willowood in Edison and Pioneer Community Hospital in Blakely for taking such good care of their mother. They would also like to express their appreciation to Dr. Garrett Bennett not only for providing excellent medical care, but for his compassion, and kindness.

Mrs. Shippey's family is accepting flowers but contributions to the American Cancer Society are also appreciated.
