ZCorp 1 year, 7 months ago

Um, this squark is a great idea. Most city's have bus routes in a paper or web site. Lots of people use the bus system in Albany and Leesberg. Not everyone is evil. Give good people a chance.

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

I wasn't aware Leesburg had a bus service. I have never seen the bus travel through Leesburg.

Just to leave you with some facts, SR2. Reagan started the program, the FCC is in charge of it, and 250 minutes is not a lot of time, just over 4 hours. If you have ever had a teenager, this is easily gone in one day. You may fiond it interesting or maddening that the gov't does not require the fee, the COMPANIES PAD YOUR BILL WITH THE FEE.

Ronald Reagan's government decided in the '80s to institute the Lifeline Assistance program. In 1996, Bill Clinton signed the Telecommunications Act into law, which offered either cell phones or land line services to low-income Americans. You can't get both.

Today, 38 states participate in the Lifeline program. If you live in one of those locales and your income is at or below 135 percent of the poverty line, or if you qualify for certain benefit programs like Medicaid and TANF, you can apply for a free cell phone that offers you 250 minutes of talk time per month.

From fcc.gov:

"All telecommunications service providers and certain other providers of telecommunications must contribute to the federal USF based on a percentage of their end-user telecommunications revenues. These companies include wireline telephone companies, wireless telephone companies, and certain Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers.

Some consumers may notice a “Universal Service” line item on their telephone bills. This line item appears when a company chooses to recover its USF contributions directly from its customers by billing them this charge. The FCC does not require this charge to be passed on to customers. Each company makes a business decision about whether and how to assess charges to recover its Universal Service costs."

Obama didn't start the program, but since Obama was elected president, the lines to receive the free phones is about 3 times longer than they used to be. I rode past Shackleford a few months ago and the line must have had 300+ people in it waiting to get their free phones.

PatrickY2K 1 year, 7 months ago

"I bet over half of these people blah blah blah..."

What fabriciated facts are the basis for this statement?

If you can't back up your statement with facts, just hide behind your alias and call me names, as you've done in the past. Only cowards are disappointed that the Herald's commenting policies are changing.

0

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

And what is your last name dopey? Y2K? but the picture bares a nice resemblance to you.

What facts do I have? Well, sorry I didn't take a picture of the long line, but I had more important things to do.

I guess you are one of the recipients of those free phones, but not surprised.

Coward? I bet you wouldn't say that to my face. Give me your name and address and I'll come pay you a visit.

3

PatrickY2K 1 year, 7 months ago

You have more important things to do than see if there's any truth to the crap that comes out of your mouth? I'll just call you Rush.

1

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

I didn't need proof, I know what they were in the line for and it wasn't to apply for a job as a cook at McDonald's. I had more important things than to stop by to take pictures of a long line, I still didn't catch your last name and I know it isn't Y2K. I'll call you Old Yeller.

3

Sally_O 1 year, 7 months ago

Hey Patrick, funny that you hide behind your alias and call people cowards. What facts do you have that VSU is not telling the truth? I have seen a similar line in East Albany, had a booth outside with big letters about Cell Phones, don't know what it was about, but it had something to do with cell phones. Maybe you should think about what you are going to say, that way people won't know how dumb you sound.

2

PatrickY2K 1 year, 7 months ago

I do not have facts that VSU is not telling the truth - I just wanted better facts than his seeing a line of people. He wasn't able to provide any, and as he has done many other times, he resorted to name-calling rather than having an intelligent conversation.

VSU has edited his comments (adding some, omitting some), so the conversation is no longer accurately represented.

Is today the last day for the cowards, or is it tomorrow?

0

Sally_O 1 year, 7 months ago

If you don't have proof then shut the hell up. Who do you think you are? You're no better or different than anybody else, you are hiding behind Patrick Y2K, so I guess that makes you a coward. What more facts do you need? Someone sees a group of people in a cell phone line, why would someone make that up? What do you want a 24 page report? I see people say stuff all the time that are untruthful, but unlike you I let it go because i don't know that it didn't happen. Some day you will grow up. You need to get out of your house for awhile and see what is going on in the world. People on this site are no more cowards than you are President Of The United States. Some people have good reasons to stay annonymous as their job may be in jeopardy. Like I said, your last name is not Y2K, so don't call people cowards if you are going to act like one yourself.

1

PatrickY2K 1 year, 7 months ago

You never ask questions? Someone makes a statement and you assume it's true? The burden of proof is not on the listener, it's on the speaker.

We aren't cowards for using this site - the cowards are the ones who make statements that wouldn't say to someone's face, much like the name-calling and threats of you and VSU. The cowards are the ones quitting this site because they will no longer get away with being verbally abusive of others.

VSU took it to a new level today, changing his comments after I had made a response. He made a couple of over-the-top accusations that I asked him to defend. Instead of defending his words, he changed them - another example of using anonymity to avoid accountability.

When this website requires a Facebook profile to participate, I'll log in with Facebook. Because of my job, I will have to be more careful of my statements, but having my identity exposed will not make me more accountable for my words.

Character is what you do when no one is watching.

0

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

You are so full of it. FYI I happened to edit my post before you responded to it, as soon as I resubmitted it, I saw that you had responded to it after the fact. It had absolutely nothing to do with you, the whole post had nothing to do with you so get over it. I don't have to answer to you or anybody else.

You still haven't given me your name and address. I want to visit you. I want to call you an idiot to your face, I want you to call me a coward to my face,

0

Sally_O 1 year, 7 months ago

LOL! Damn VSU you make a simple comment and Patrick just won't leave it alone. Patrick needs to take his sheet off his head and move on and get a life.

0

PatrickY2K 1 year, 7 months ago

You said over half the people who get Reagan phones lie on their taxes. That's the fact that I asked about, but it wasn't up very long.

You're such an angry person.

0

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

I might have said that but I changed it because I felt it wasn't the right thing to say so that was why I edited it out before the time ran out. (You only have 15 minutes to edit) It had nothing to do with you or anybody else, I just did what I felt was the right thing to do. But you come in here as if you are wearing a set of brass balls saying I changed it to make you look foolish or whatever. It had nothing to do with you, I didn't even see your stupid comment until I hit the edit comment button to resubmit it.

You're such a stupid person.

You still haven't given me your name and address so I can come visit you.

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

"He resorted to name-calling rather than having an intelligent conversation." Blah! Blah! Blah! Yada! Yada! Yada! Blah! Blah! Blah! Yakity Yak Yak! Blah! Blah! and once again Blah! Awww! Did that big bad VSU hurt your feelings? Would you like a tissue? Would you like some cheese to go with that whine?

Dude, you are pathetic, you sound like an 8 year old child crying to his mama about someone being mean to you.

0

erudite 1 year, 7 months ago

Do you think that maybe some of those folks were ex-Cooper, Merck, or Mars employees? Do you think perhaps it was the time of day? Or did the line appear three times as long every minute of every day?

Do you think Albany or SWGA is a model for the rest of the country?

1

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

Well if they were, they waited a long time to get them, those companies left several years ago. I only rode by and noticed the long line, i didn't stop and asked them why they were in the line to get their free phone, but a lot of them looked like they needed to go on a diet so I know they wasn't going hungry, didn't look like they missed too many meals. Next time I see the line, I will bring along a video camera and interview each one. I bet i would find none of them has worked a day in their lives.

Do I think Albany is a model for the rest of the country? Absolutely! Albany is a fine example of what not to become. If they were to do a documentary of Albany, Ga. People would quickly understand why Albany is in the top ten in the country in poverty, depressing cities, Teen pregnancies and other categories most cities would be ashamed of being in the top ten.

1

erudite 1 year, 7 months ago

A couple of things: The rest of the US is not like Albany or SWGA. In the southwest, I am sure people are complaining abut the Mexicans, the folks in Washington State are complaining about the Canadians coming for 'cheap' gas and want an entrance fee assessed, in NY and New England, people complain about everyone! And nobody cares if you 'believe' or not.

Mal- (bad) nutrition often causes weight problems b/c the body doesn't work right. Obesity is not always a sign of over-eating; it is often a sign of the bad nutrition. Empty or non-nutritious calories are far cheaper than nutritious ones. The body shuts down and keeps the bad stuff to store as fat in a survival response. Sure, some people eat far too much but they are not in line for a phone; they are in line at all the buffets in this town.

If we learn from our parents, who learned from their parents, who learned from their parents for generations and the oldest generations had nothing, including an education, how are we supposed to learn this stuff?

Where did you learn your work ethic? To create a resume? To know what a resume is?

0

VSU 1 year, 7 months ago

I taught myself my work ethic, I did what it takes to move up in the world, not waiting for a handout or expect to be moved up the ladder just because I felt the world owed it to me. I did it the good old fashioned way, through hard work. some people today gets a minimum wage job and expects to get a CEO position 4 months into the job.

0

dingleberry 1 year, 7 months ago

This is correct. Most people do not realized that these phones are being paid for through fees they are charged, supposedly with no federal money involved. There is a quasi-government corp that distributes the money in five categories--not just phones--with much of the money going back to the phone companies. It is billions per year distributed and about two years ago there was $7 billion undistributed.

Obama gets the credit or the blame--however one sees the program--since the major phone distribution began after his first election. Some companies offer purchase of extra minutes at a rate perhaps lower than what you pay but there are known cases of people getting multiple phones to get more minutes since the eligibility bar is pretty low and the companies don't care.

Gotcha Squawker...do tax payers use the bus? Silly me the non tax payers have all the gadgets too..when their beemers break down they take the bus...

1

ZCorp 1 year, 7 months ago

Yes, tax payers do use the bus and everyone I see has Internet mobile ability. Try again......

2

RedEric 1 year, 7 months ago

You are running with a group that has Internet phones and think everyone has them. I don't. After being called in on weekends for "emergencies" for decades I don't carry. Phones, that is.

Where is the bus service in Leesburg?

1

chinaberry25 1 year, 7 months ago

Appl on the phone would be nice, but the very least they could have the schedule on the net. Albany has always been 10 years behind the rest of the world. But all said and done, for what some of you pay for cell phones per month, you could make a car payment unless you have a small prepaid cell phone. And they are not great for appls. Go ahead and insult folks all you want on here because after this week it will all be over. Going to see names for Facebook like WALB.

0

Amazed2 1 year, 7 months ago

Buses in Leesburg? Hmm must be an Albany Transit driver taking his bus home?? Never heard about a Leesburg bus route??

1

bigbob 1 year, 7 months ago

Leesburg has a bus route? Don't think so but they should have Albanys buses pick up & drop off workers in Lee Cty everyday after all they do support most of Albanys finest.

0

Thurman 1 year, 7 months ago

If you need a bus ride to Terrell County just stand on a corner along Weymouth Rd. At approximately 4:30 each day a small white bus with "Terrell County" labled all over it comes along on a timely manner.

0

dingleberry 1 year, 7 months ago

Sounds like the "Medicaid bus" which seems to have a schedule running on highway 82 with frequency. Also makes stops at Wal-mart.

1

sowegap 1 year, 7 months ago

That is not a medicaid bus, one young man is attending Albany Technical College and rides it everyday. If you can afford to pay, they will pick you up as well.

0

alleebrin 1 year, 7 months ago

Well, my first concern is the number of people who ride the public system - I NEVER SEE MORE THAN ONE OR TWO PEOPLE ON THE BUS AT ANY LOCATION IN TOWN!! I question whether a public bus system is needed at all! And while you are at it, how about a big screen TV?? A public toilet?? Snack bar?? Heated/cooled seats?? These are the folks who should have to work for their wishlist!!

1

dingleberry 1 year, 7 months ago

There is a big federal subsidy to the local bus system every year. Even with it, the transit system loses money, as I recall. All of which brings up the question of where we are in the process of getting the multi-modal. Awful quiet on that issue as the winners and losers of the battle are sorted out.

0

erudite 1 year, 7 months ago

If the system did more than make a big circle to the mall and to DC, I would take it. All it needs to do is travel down G'ville to the Plantation, come down Old Dawson, turn onto Westover, left to G'ville, to Slappey, turn right, go to 234, come back up Westover and loop around.

The routes are not set up for commuters to save money; they are set up for people to go and spend money.

0

Abytaxpayer 1 year, 7 months ago

dingle you are right the Taxpayers of ALBANY pump more than a million dollars a year into the bus system.

0

Sherwood_Eagle_Alum 1 year, 7 months ago

That is a neat idea, however, I don't think the number of people who would utilize this app would justify the money required to develop and maintain it.
