Mothers Are Breadwinners For Growing Share Of U.S. Families

May 29 (Reuters) - Mothers are the primary or sole source of income for a growing number of U.S. families in a dramatic shift in American homes and the workplace from just a few decades ago, the Pew Research Center said in a study released on Wednesday.

Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the study said a record 40 percent of all U.S. households with children relied on mothers as their main or only source of income. That marked a sharp increase from 11 percent of families in 1960.

The so-called "breadwinner moms" are split into two camps, with married mothers who have a higher income than their husbands accounting for 37 percent and 67 percent consisting of single mothers, the survey said.

It said married women who out-earn their husbands tended to be slightly older, disproportionately white and college educated and much better paid than single mothers, who were younger, more likely to be black or Hispanic and less likely to have a college degree.

Single mothers now make up one-quarter of all U.S. households with children and women make up almost half of the U.S. labor force.

According to the Pew study, the employment rate of married mothers with children has jumped from 37 percent in 1968 to 65 percent in 2011.

I guess that counts for all the unwed baby producers around here being the "bread winner" bringing home the welfare.

I believe that's cause if they claim they don't know who the Daddy of a child is She and the child gets a larger amount from welfare assistance.

"67 percent consisting of single mothers..." half where the fathers are non-existent.

There are quite a few reasons why the number of single moms continues to grow: 1) women are choosing freely not to wed. 2) marriage does not make a baby; sex does. 3) most assistance programs will DROP the family if the father is identified because the 'system' (from a long long time ago) assumes the male is employable. 4) Mothers are not 'on welfare'; the child is. In order for that child to collect, the MOM must be working. 5) Big box stores like Wal-mart will not hire women at full time hours so that they do not have to pay benefits BUT the stores get a TAX BREAK for hiring women who receive monies for children. 6) Even professional women still make far less than their male counter-part; women currently earn an average of .82 to every male dollar for the same work. To offer an extreme example, look at the money a WNBA player makes to what an NBA player does. 7) The restrictions and/or social pressure to NOT terminate a pregnancy, even when the mother knows she cannot handle a baby for one reason or another, hinders many. 8) Traditions that women should be in the kitchen or the bedroom and not outside the home. 9) Media sells everything using women as sex objects. 10) People complain that women have sex and become pregnant. It takes two to tango.

2) marriage does not make a baby; sex does.

Actually a woman doesn't have to have sex to get pregnant. She could get artificially inseminated.

6) Even professional women still make far less than their male counter-part; women currently earn an average of .82 to every male dollar for the same work. To offer an extreme example, look at the money a WNBA player makes to what an NBA player does.

More people pay more money to watch men's basketball than women's basketball. The NBA has a much larger fan base than the WNBA.

10) People complain that women have sex and become pregnant. It takes two to tango.

I don't think most people complain that women get pregnant, I think most complain that women get pregnant and the fathers don't take responibilities for their child. Deadbeat dads they call them. The father should help support the child, not the tax payers. That is one of the reasons kids go bad these days. the lack of a positive father figure in their lives.

As far as it takes two to tango, once again the woman could get artificially inseminated.

Now all we have to do is manufacture artificial sperm and we won't need men either!!

What if the dad is a creep? Abusive, drunk, doper, incarcerated?

Why don't people watch women's hoops? Because it is not marketed? What about the women here in town working at Wally world for super low wages and at less than full time hours? Those are the women we're speaking of.

So why do people complain about welfare moms when the problem is dead beat dads? why not scream and squawk about them? Why do women receive the brunt of the welfare arguments?

Look at all those rules you listed that women on welfare have to live under! Welfare was passed because we are a good people and willing to help someone having a problem, but those who choose it as a lifestyle have entered into voluntary slavery. History shows that voluntary slavery was not unknown. Usually because they had no other means of survival. Do these voluntary slaves feel there is no other option?

Ten excuses for not doing what is right.

I wonder if the math calculations consider the number of children per mother? Like do you get extra points for each child?
