Tifton American Legion post to vote on dissolving Scout charter

TIFTON, Ga. -- The home base for a Tifton Boy Scout troop planned a special called meeting today to decide whether to end 20-year relationship with the Boy Scouts of America following the organization's decision to allow openly gay boys into its ranks.

Tifton American Legion Post 21 called a special meeting for today to weigh its charter with Boy Scout Troop 321, South Georgia Council Executive Matt Hart said.

"They sent a letter saying that that they've called a meeting to decide whether they want to continue to be the home for that troop," Hart said.

A telephone number provided by the national American Legion organization for Post 21 in Tifton was disconnected Thursday.

Last week, the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America voted to allow openly gay youth to join the organization beginning next year. The decision has led to discussions from some faith-based organizations and others who provide a home base to scouts as to whether the ruling conforms with their respective moral values.

So far, Hart said the Tifton troop was the only one in the 29 county council that is facing dissolution of its charter over the decision.

"It would be our hope that people would understand that the ruling that came down last week didn't advocate homosexuality, but instead, is meant to make sure that, the Boy Scouts of America pays no attention to sexuality at all -- that all boys, regardless of what category they may be in, can be a part of the organization."

If the group votes to dissolve the charter, Troop 62, which housed at a nearby Methodist Church, would accept any of the scouts who chose to remain in the organization, Hart said.

"This isn't the first time we've faced some criticism," Hart said. "Everyone thought it was the end of the world when scouting integrated. Everyone thought it was over when we allowed women to serve in leadership roles. This is just another issue we've had to overcome."

The churches will be kicking them out too because GLAAD won't be satisfied until the BSA approves homosexual leaders.

Yea very unfortunate but the Boy Scouts are done. I would never let my son be part of an organization that want to make it appear and brain wash young teens into thinking that Queer is OK and Normal too. Just shut it down say goodbye to what was.

You would rather brainwash the youth that hating people because they are different is OK? Homosexuality is OK and it is normal. Believing in and following the 'word' of imaginary friends is a mental illness.

Euridite you are showing your true liberal self. Yes people are and can be different! My problem is with people like you that want to decide for me what I should accept into mine and my families life as normal. Sorry but I do not think openly Gay boys at 9, 10, 12, 15 years old is normal in society and quite honestly not sure you really understand what you are asking. Stick a prissy 12 yr old boy into a group of 10 to 20 normal boys, send them on a camping trip. You think that's normal? Boys will be Boys that are human. Somebody is going to be out place and get picked on and then people like you want to sue the Boy Scouts. Kind of Crazy to even want to think about this deal.

No, I am showing my human side. Why can't I advocate for gay acceptance in the same way you advocate shunning?

HATE is not a human value; it has to be taught. Obviously you have been taught to hate people who are not heterosexual. And sadly, now you have taught your sons to hate.

I am glad I was not taught to hate people with your ideas.

Being gay isn't a disease, nor is it a choice.

Absolutely! Why would someone choose to be gay and be so hated by people like Amazed? It is like someone choosing to b e black in the south; a lifetime of distrust and hate to look forward to.

Well, what if it is a choice? Would the individual then be lesser for have exercised independent judgment. I think not. There are a lot of educated assumptions about biological imposition of sexual orientation but as of yet there is no empirical evidence. Who really cares? Prejudice and hatred are elements of the dark side of humanity and evermore proving the need for redemption.

I suppose I still wouldn't treat them any differently. The Bible teaches us many things, but hatred is not one.

No, it's not. When did you choose to become heterosexual?

So what if it is a choice? If a person wants to hate someone one reason is as good as another.

Erudite! Guezz you are wanting to join the Scouts? Just not sure which scouts??

No, I just want every girl or boy to be able to join a group without having to fear for their lives. Aren't these groups supposed to be comprised of quality humans? Is hate a quality you want to spread or require?

Tifton American Legion Post 21 has done a crazy and announced publicly their hatred for gays. I find that grossly hypocritical as there are local gay war veterans who served heroically in the military for our country and are eligible for membership in the American Legion. Sounds more like a clan than an AL Post.

What happened to the Facebook commenting, meaning why is this article...and others, I think...available to comment on in the old way?

Can someone shed some light on this?

Articles that were available for anonymous comment before the change are still available for anonymous commenting. Articles after the change are supposedly FB comments only.

It doesn't work very well as it is now. Maybe they are trying to work out the kinks.
