Gunman in motel shooting indicted

ALBANY, Ga. -- The Dougherty County Grand Jury has handed down an indictment against the suspect in a shotgun attack against a guest at Merry Acres Inn and another involving an alleged family-operated burglary ring.

According to the indictment, Gauffrey Alexander Hall is charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery for the Nov. 23, 2012, attack of Thomas Lee Bennett, then 41.

Bennett, who had come from North Carolina to visit relatives, was a guest at Merry Acres Inn on Dawson Road the night that he was shot. Bennett told police he noticed two men, one of them with a shotgun, approaching as he walked back to his room from the hotel ice machine.

As stated in the police report, Bennett ran to the foyer of his suite and slammed the door. One of the assailants then shot Bennett through a window, police officials said.

Two men, Sydney Kerlegon, 21, and Travin Bryant, 19, were charged with the crime but, based on further investigation by the APD, were later cleared.

Bennett, shot in the back, survived the attack but according to the indictment was "deprived of the use of his spleen and large intestine."
