Turner tax case heading to supreme court

ASHBURN, Ga. — A dispute between local governments in Turner County is headed to the state’s highest court.

The Turner County Commission and the municipal governments of Ashburn, Rebecca and Sycamore reached an impasse on how best to split the proceeds of Local Option Sales Taxes that are collected throughout the county.

While the law outlined a procedure for arbitration, the Turner County Commission opted instead to file a motion to dismiss a petition for arbitration arguing it was unconstitutional. A superior court dismissed the county’s motion and ruled that the city had the best plan, reducing the county’s proceeds from 65 percent to 50 percent.

Turner County then appealing to the Georgia Supreme Court.

Arguments will be heard on Tuesday.
