Newton voters re-elect Mayor Gary Coker to new term

NEWTON — Newton voters returned their mayor to a new four-year term in office Tuesday and approved Sunday liquor sales by a single vote.

Unofficial vote totals from Tuesday night’s election showed that Newton residents, by a 66-65 vote, decided to allow Sunday sales of alcohol at stores.

In the only contested muncipal contest, mayor Gary Coker was returned to office for a new four-year term starting in January. Coker defeated his opponent, Linda Crawford, by a vote of 78 to 48.
