A citizens group wants to oust three members of the Baker County School Board

Janet Anderson charges some members of the Baker School Board are not following policy and are misusing funds

NEWTON — A group of concerned citizens held a news conference Friday on the steps of the Baker County Courthouse where they announced that an attempt to recall three of five members of the Baker County School Board was under way.

Recall Committee Chair Janet Anderson said Friday the group had gathered nearly 300 signatures on a petition to recall board members Brenda King, Chasity Moye and Sharon Heard. The three board members took office in January.

“We have a problem with the Board of Education not following board policy,” Anderson said. “We regard this as a very serious problem.

“Our children are not getting a good foundation for education. There is also misuse of funds, which poses a problem for the entire community.”

Anderson said that they only needed 200 signatures of registered voters and wound up getting 300. She said she had presented the petition to the Baker County Elections Office.

“We are now waiting on the voters registration office to verify the signatures, then we’ll move forward with the actual recall application,” Anderson said.

There are a little more than 320 students in the Baker County School System.
