Albany Veterans Day observances planned

Two men associated with the Albany Marine base will speak at Veterans Day events Monday

ALBANY — Albany State University and Darton State College have separate Veterans Day programs scheduled Monday to honor all U.S. military personnel.

Also, Albany Technical College has a Veterans Day program set at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Byne Memorial Baptist Church at 10:45 a.m. today will present a musical, “Celebrate America: Remembering Our Heritage, Praying for our Future.”

And on Monday, American Legion Walter H. Burt Post 30 will be dedicating a World War II Memorial at Veterans Park on Front Street. The event will open at 10 a.m., with the formal ceremony at 11 a.m.

Albany State University will honor U.S. military personnel and celebrate their service at an annual Veterans Day observance 11 a.m. Monday on the grounds adjacent to Orene Hall located on the campus.

This year’s speaker is Col. Yori Escalante, who serves as the Chief of Staff for Marine Corps Logistics Command at the Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany.

Escalante is a combat engineer and has commanded at every level from Combat Engineer Platoon to Combat Logistics Regiment. He deployed to Italy in 1996 in support of operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, twice to Iraq in 2003 and 2004, and most recently spent a year in Afghanistan from 2011-12. He has also served at the Department of State, directing humanitarian assistance in post-conflict nations.

The Mount Vernon, N.Y., native hails from Houston, Texas, and is a 1986 graduate of Texas A&M University.

Albany Tech’s will be at Kirkland Conference Center. The speaker will be retired Marine Col. Daniel J. Gillan, former head of maintenance at MCLB-Albany. Gillan is currently president/CEO of the Albany YMCA.

Darton State College’s Office of Military and Adult Education will be hosting a Veterans Day ceremony titled “Darton Salutes: A Tribute to Our Veterans” on Monday at 2 p.m. in Building B, room 101.

Stefane Raulerson, director of Military and Adult Education at Darton State College, said, “We want to honor and thank our veterans for their service. Through this ceremony, we hope to express our sincere gratitude to those who have served.”
