LEESBURG — The Pregnancy Resource Center of Lee County recently hosted its 2nd annual banquet featuring a speech by Gianna Jessen, a noted speaker and inspiration for the 2012 film “October Baby.”
Cheryl Vinson, executive director for the Center, said Jessen’s story “takes us to a new understanding of the importance of life.”
Jessen has cerebral palsy due to a lack of oxygen in her mother’s failed saline abortion attempt, Vinson said.
“When you talk to her for just a few moments, she is likely to punctuate every sentence with a deep infectious laugh,” Vinson said. “Talk to her for just a few moments longer, as her story unfolds, it become apparent that the constant joy has overcome unspeakable challenges.”
Vinson said Jessen has testified before Congress twice and watched as President George W. Bush signed the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, which provides safeguards for those born during failed abortion attempts.
“We were tremendously blessed by being able to bring Gianna to speak on behalf of our center,” she said. “Her story, along with a personal story from one of our own peer counselors, made a powerful impact on our audience.”
Vinson said the center has experienced a productive year in terms of educating the public on options and resources that are available in the eevent of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy.
She said the center hopes to offer more services this coming year including free ultrasounds, more community education, more marketing and additional staff. Vinson also said the center’s vision for the future includes a larger facility
