Three charged in Worth beating case

GBI arrests three after elderly man beaten

SYLVESTER — The Sylvester office of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has confirmed the arrest of three suspects Thursday in connection with the beating and robbery of Wendell Newell, 79, a Worth County resident.

The Worth County Sheriff’s Office was contacted after a neighbor found Newell unconscious inside his residence on Woodcrest Road on Nov. 18, GBI officials state.

According to a GBI release, Jesse James Mitchell, 29, was taken into custody in Albany Thursday and charged with one count of misdemeanor theft by taking and two felony counts of theft by taking. Mitchell is being housed at the Worth County Jail, the release states.

The GBI release further states that Crystal Miles, 28 is charged with one count of misdemeanor theft by taking, three counts of felony theft by taking and one count of robbery. Justin Ware, 28, is charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a tool for the commission of a crime, misdemeanor theft by taking and three counts of felony theft by taking, GBI officials say. According to the GBI release, Miles and Ware were booked into the Crisp County Jail.

Newell was taken to a local hospital where is being treated for his injuries, GBI officials say.
