PREP FOOTBALL: Preview capsules, Herald Player of the Week announced

Today’s Games

Monroe Tornadoes (2-3) at Dougherty Trojans (0-5)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Hugh Mills Stadium

Overview: Tonight was supposed to be an open dates for both schools. This was a game was originally scheduled for Oct. 19 but was moved so that it didn’t conflict with Albany State’s homecoming on that date. It’s a key game for Monroe in order to remain in the postseason chase. Dougherty has improved but is still searching for its first win.

Miller County Pirates (1-4) at Calhoun County Eagles (1-4)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Calhoun County High School, Edison

Overview: After opening Region 1-A play last week with losses, neither team can afford another setback if they hope to remain in the postseason chase. Miller squandered a 13-0 lead last week against Mitchell County and fell 20-13, while Calhoun County lost a heartbreaking 8-0 decision to Terrell County. The winner avoids falling further behind in the second half of the season.

Lee County Trojans (5-0) at Hardaway Hawks (2-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Kinnett Stadium, Columbus

Overview: Herald No. 1 Lee County opens Region 1-AAAAA play against a Hardaway squad that has lost three straight after opening the season 2-0. The Trojans struggled a bit against Dodge County last week before rolling to a 28-14 victory. This is the first of two straight road games for Lee County. The Trojans are off next week before visiting Thomas County Central on Oct. 18.

Randolph-Clay Red Devils (2-2) at Mitchell County Eagles (2-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Centennial Stadium, Camilla

Overview: Randolph-Clay evened its record last week with a win over Barbour County, while Mitchell scored its second come-from-behind win in its past three games, beating Miller County last week. The winner maintains a share of the first-place lead in the Region 1-A standings. The way both teams are capable of scoring points, there may not be much defense.

Tiftarea Panthers (2-2) at Crisp Academy Wildcats (4-1)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Crisp Academy, Cordele

Overview: The Wildcats lost their first game of the season last week against Terrell Academy. Tiftarea, meanwhile, got thumped by Westwood. This is the final nonregion game of the season for both schools — Tiftarea plays host to Pinewood Christian next week, while Crisp Academy plays host to Fullington Academy.

Valwood Valiants (4-0) at Sherwood Christian Eagles (2-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Sherwood Christian School

Overview: Sherwood will have its hands full trying to slow down Valwood, who has outscored its opponents by a combined 118-54 this season. It’s the region opener for both schools. Valwood went undefeated last year and captured the GISA Class AA state title.

Westwood Wildcats (3-1-1) at Brookwood Warriors (2-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Brookwood School, Thomasville

Overview: Westwood opens region play on the road. The Wildcats’ defense has been stout, allowing just 7.5 points per game during their current three-game winning streak. Brookwood is 2-1 since opening its season with consecutive losses. The Warriors defeated Flint River Academy 32-16 last week.

Terrell Academy Eagles (3-2) at Southwest Georgia (3-2)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Southwest Georgia Academy, Damascus

Overview: Terrell Academy showed no signs of a hangover from its 30-point loss to Southland two weeks ago when they upended Crisp 21-7 last week. The Eagles need a good showing before opening region play next week. Southwest Georgia looks to rebound after getting clobbered by Westfield last week.

Berrien Rebels (3-1) at Early County Bobcats (2-3)

When: 7:30 p.m.

Site: Early County High School, Blakely

Overview: Berrien, which is off to its best start in four years under first-year coach Ed Pilcher, opens its Region 1-AA schedule after an open date last week. Early County played power Brooks County tough last week before falling to the Trojans in the second half. The Bobcats need a victory to avoid falling too far behind in the region standings.

Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets (4-1) at Bainbridge Bearcats (2-2)

When: 8 p.m.

Site: Bainbridge High School, Bainbridge

Overview: One of the top games in the state will be played in Bainbridge tonight when the Herald No. 4 Bearcats host state-ranked No. 6 Thomas County Central. It’s the Region 1-AAAAA opener for both teams. TCC’s only loss was to state power Valdosta. Bainbridge, with the exception of a 36-0 loss to Westlake two weeks ago, has been exceptional on defense. Look for a slugfest.

Saturday’s Game

Baconton Blazers (1-4) at North Cobb Christian (0-4)

When: 7 p.m.

Site: North Cobb Christian School, Kennesaw

Overview: Baconton will make the near four-hour bus drive to Cobb County to tackle North Cobb Christian after last week’s thumping of Stewart Quitman. Both teams are playing non-region schedules.
