Things to know in metro Albany: Oct. 7-13, 2013

MONDAY

Voter registration deadline: If you aren’t registered to vote and want to participate in the Nov. 5 Albany municipal election, today is the deadline to get registered or to make a change of address. Forms are available at Dougherty County public libraries, public assistance agencies and the elections office in room 220 of the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave. Two positions on the City Commission will be decided — Wards 2 and 3. Ward 5 Commissioner Bob Langstaff is unopposed in his re-election bid. The early voting period is Oct. 14-Nov. 1. For information, call (229) 431-3247.

Dougherty School Board: The board has its regular night meeting at 7 p.m., preceded by a briefing at 6 p.m. Both meetings are at the School Administration Building, 200 Pine Ave. On the agenda, a presentation from the Georgia School Board Association on a search for a permanent school superintendent and a recommendation for the board to contract with GSBA to conduct the candidate search. Also, there will be a presentation of a collaborative project between the school system and Albany Technical College.

Dougherty County Commission: The commission meets in regular session at 10 a.m. in room 100 of the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave. On the agenda are consideration of resolutions that include an $18,500 contract with Georgia Mass Appraisal and Services; a $1.73 million contract with SunGuard Public Sector for a criminal justice information system; an amendment to an agreement with the Southwest Georgia Association of Convalescent and Aging Persons, and an access/use agreement with BFEL Indemnitor for installation of environmental wells on county property.

Lee School Board: The board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the Board of Education office. The agenda items include a request to donate surplus textbooks to the Dougherty Rotary Club; consideration for two out-of-state trips by the Navy JROTC, and a request for additional non-instructional days for a nonth-grade student.

Easter Seals Awards: Easter Seals Southern Georgia will conduct its annual awards program at 6 p.m. at the Creekside Education Center at Chehaw, 105 Chehaw Park Road. The organization will recognize community leaders and clients, along other organizations and volunteers who support its programs.

TUESDAY

Lee Elections Board: The Lee County Board of Elections and Registration meets at 9 a.m. at the Tharp Government Center, 102 Starksville Ave. North, Leesburg. An agenda was not available Friday.

Lee County Commission: The board has a work session at 6 p.m. at the Tharp Governmental Center, 102 Starksville Ave. North, Leesburg. No agenda was available Friday.

Albany City Commission: The commission does not meet this week.

WEDNESDAY

Rise N Shine: The Albany Area Chamber of Commerce’s Rise N Shine brakfast focuses on Partners in Excellence. Coffee at 7:30 a.m., with breakfast and program following at 8 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn on Front Street downtown.

Report card day: Dougherty County School System report cards go out.

Dougherty Library Board: The Dougherty County Public Library Board of Trustees meets at 5 p.m. at the Northwest Library, 2507 Dawson Road, to discuss the Furniture, fixtures and equipment for the Central Library Renovation Project.

THURSDAY

WG&L Commission: The board of the Albany Water, Gas and Light Commission meets at 8:30 a.m. in the boardroom of the utility’s headquarters, 201 Pine Ave. No agenda was available Friday.

Bucks and Bows: The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia is hosting its second “Bucks and Bows” dinner and auction at 6:30 p.m. the Chehaw Creekside Education Center, 105 Chehaw Park Road, to help improve a Girl Scout property often used for outdoor activities. The auction prize list includes bow hunts for eight individuals next month at Camp Okitayakani in Cuthbert.
