SYLVESTER- The funeral services for the late Mr. Henry Lee Slaughter of 512 Thigpen Trail, Doerun, Georgia, who departed this life on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, Georgia, Will be held on Saturday, October 2, 2013 at 3:00 p..m. from the Unity Baptist Church in Sylvester, Georgia with the Reverend Jackie Banks officiating. Burial will follow in the Cool Springs Memorial Cemetery in Sale City, Georgia.

Mr. Henry Lee Slaughter, affectionately known as “Brah” and “Slaughter” was born March 10, 1935, in Mitchell County, Georgia. At an early age, he joined Mitchell Grove Baptist Church, in Worth County.

Henry was raised and educated in the Worth County School System. He countinued his education at Fort Valley State University. He placed his college education on hold for the next three years while he voluntarily enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon completion of his military career, he continued his education at Albany State University where he received his Bachelors degree in Education. He also spent a year in India as a Foreign Exchange Instructor.

Henry served as an Educator at Worth County High School until his retirement after 33 years. He also served as the Adult Education Director in Worth County. Because of his desire to increase the knowledge of others, he taught courses at Valdosta State College and prepared inmates at the Worth County Correctional Institute to obtain their GED. Henry not only educated students, he also transported them to and from school as a bus driver for 42 years until his retirement in 2013. Henry had such a connection to the Worth County School system, he also agreed to work ticket sales for the athletic department.

Henry participated in many organizations such as the New Farmers of America where he served as the National President; Worth County Young Farmers Association where he served as the Secretary; American Legion Post 512; and the NAACP.

Henry’s memory will be cherished by his loved ones who include his sons: Chennault Slaughter (Cindy), Phoenix, AZ; Stacey Slaughter (Tifarah), Las Cruces, NM; Eric Slaughter (Tina), Doerun, GA; daughters: Katisha Elliott and Cheryl Whitted, Doerun, GA; Dominique Elam (Marvin), Fort Lee, VA; brother: Nathaniel Slaughter (Justine); four sister-in-laws: Alma Hardy and Delois Harmon (Paul), Macon, GA; Carolyn Rucker and Gwendolyn Fisher, Hartwell, GA; close cousins: Melvin Slaughter, Lebanon, TN; Roy Jones (Janie), North Augusta, SC; and Jackie Banks (Mrs. Banks), Linette, AL; 10 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren.
