ALBANY — Mary Walker, a nearly two-decade independent contractor with The Albany Herald, was recently named the publication’s Carrier of the Year.

When she was first informed that she would be receiving the honor, she said she had never considered getting acknowledged in such a way.

“It’s just (recognition) that I’m doing a good job,” she said. “I’m kinda shocked. I just go and get the paper and do my route and go home. I never thought about being Carrier of the Year.”

On a typical day, she picks up her papers at The Herald around 1:30 a.m. — which is when Walker’s day starts.

“I ride and roll; I don’t just stay here and roll,” she said. “It saves time, because you can spend 40 minutes doing that. I get through it and go home.”

Walker’s usual route goes through the East Albany area, and then the downtown area — including the businesses in that district — through Ninth Avenue.

“It’s a typical seven days a week,” she said. “It is quicker on the weekends when some of the businesses are closed.”

Walker has enjoyed a lengthy tenure working as a contractor with The Herald, having celebrated 19 years on Oct. 1.

Walker says her dependability possibly made her stand out among the paper’s other carriers.

“They don’t have to call me to (figure out) where I’m at, and I’ve kept complaints down,” Walker said. “Every now and then I’ll get a complaint, but very seldom.”

In the days she has been affiliated with The Herald, she said she has been able to meet a lot of different people. That is the thing she says she has liked most about her job, but their are other perks.

“(I’ll be contracting with The Herald) as long as my health stays good,” she said. I was very shocked and very honored they chose me (as Carrier of the Year). Whatever I do, I try to do to the best of my ability.”
