FLETCHER: As America crumbles, no one is right

Veins of power struggle explode into a bloody mess, Rupturing the nation’s core bursting from the stress.

With national parks shut down, whole government agencies sitting idle, honest working people being furloughed or going unpaid, and small businesses across the country straddling an ever-widening chasm that drops straight down to nonexistence, there’s plenty to be upset about during this absolutely ludicrous shutdown of the federal government.

But even with all that — and more, much more — that’s not what bothers me most about this political idiocy perpetrated by officials we elected and we pay to represent us.

No, what really, really sticks in my craw is that, even with the complete lack of leadership shown by these supposedly grown men and women in our Congress and in the White House who are acting more like spoiled brats angry that they’re not getting their way, is that millions and millions of lemmings who call themselves people continue to defend the group most closely associated with their personal ideology.

I’m stunned every time I hear or read some obviously mindless creature who doesn’t have the capacity to think for him- or herself mutter such inane statements as “The Republicans should stick to their guns …” or “The tea party is really making a bold statement” … or “The Democrats have got to continue to support the president …”

With this once-proud nation teetering on the brink of insolvency, does anyone with even three surviving brain cells really believe any government official is doing what’s in the best interest of the American people right now? Does anyone really believe the strategy of doing nothing, blaming each other and hoping to win the next election is in anyone’s best interest … or anyone who is not a politician?

If you count yourself among such a group, a little advice: Please wake up. Please quit listening to nut jobs like Rush Limbaugh and Bill Maher and Mark Williams. Please quit reading politician-funded blogs and lunatic fringe-sponsored websites to determine who to blame for the impotency that has enveloped Washington or how you should feel about it. Please try to find some straightforward — read that nonpartisan — information — it’s rare, but it’s out there — and decide for yourself whose interest is being served by these cretins who call themselves public officials.

Rarely has such a self-serving group done so little in the name of democracy and managed to hold onto positions of power. And the saddest part of all is that we’re to blame.

It’s not just that we put these phonies in office — hell, most of them were at least passably decent people when they first ran. But Washington has become such a cesspool of corruption, no one — and I mean no one — serving in the seats of power has managed to maintain more than an ounce of credibility as they’ve followed the party line like the good little spineless sycophants that they are, whoring out their very souls and the future of this nation, pimped out by the likes of the Koch brothers, Grover Norquist and others with deep enough pockets.

If the Greatest Generation were still running America — if we hadn’t become so spineless in our blind devotion to Wall Street and Big Oil and the extremes of the now useless political parties — we’d demand that our representatives do their job. We’d march on Washington; we’d start recall petitions; we’d campaign against every single incumbent holding a federal elected office. No, we don’t have to descend to the level of the gun-loving hate groups that call themselves militia and advocate for violent overthrow of this corrupt government. There are other, nonviolent ways to get rid of them. But we have to get rid of them.

The politicians tell us America is broke and that the other side is responsible. That’s bull. America ain’t broke. It’s the spineless politicians — drunk on their lust for money and the control that we cede to them — who need fixing. The way to do that is to get them out of office, every one of them.

Until we have the guts to stand up and say enough, to show these leeches in Washington that their lies will no longer be tolerated, we’ll continue to subsidize their destruction of a once-proud nation now on the verge of collapse. I, for one, am sick of watching these dirtbags fiddle — and fiddle away our future — while America burns down around them.
