Tifton planning Veterans Day celebration

TIFTON — In honor of the men and women who have served the United States through military service and in memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, the city of Tifton and the Tifton-Tift County Tourism Association are hosting their first Veterans Day Celebration.

Activities on Nov. 9 will include a pancake breakfast, parade and fireworks.

The festivities kick off at 8 a.m. with a Veterans’ Pancake Breakfast, sponsored by the Exchange Club of Tifton. The breakfast will be held at the VFW on Victory Drive. Veterans and children under 5 eat free. Guests cna join in for $2 each.

“One of the projects of Exchange Club is Americanism. We feel it is the least we can do to serve our veterans for all that they did to keep us safe,” said Will Roberts, Exchange Club president.

The day will continue with a patriotic parade, which will kick off at 11 a.m. downtown. The parade route will begin at Third and Main streets. It will travel down Main to Eighth Street, turning left and traveling to Central Avenue. Turning left on Central, the parade will travel to Veterans Park, where it will end with the national anthem and a salute to veterans.

Everyone is encouraged to decorate a float and participate in the parade. The entry fee is $20. All funds raised from the parade will be used to purchase new flags for downtown, organizers say, adding the public is encouraged to line the streets in honor of all of our veterans.

Tyron Spearman, tourism coordinator, said, “It is important that we, as a community, remember and honor those who have sacrificed so that Americans can enjoy a better way of life. What better way than to celebrate all day with fun activities for the whole family?”

The celebration will continue all around town. The All that Glitters Fall Affair will begin at 9 a.m., located at 304 W. 20th St.

The Georgia Museum of Agriculture will open its gates at 11 a.m. for regular day-time activities. At 5:30 p.m., “The Incredibles” will be shown on the large movie screen. The First United Methodist Bluegrass Band will play at 7 p.m., followed by a flag ceremony and salute to veterans and fallen soldiers.

At 8 p.m., a fireworks spectacular will cap off the day. Entrance to the evening activities at the Museum is $10 per car.

The celebration will continue on Nov. 11 with a Veterans Day program, including a guest speaker, at Veterans Park in downtown. The program will begin at 11 am.

A bonus to the celebration will be artifacts from the 2008 Tifton visit of the Moving Wall. They will be displayed at the Tifton Welcome Station, 504 Main St., Oct. 23-Nov.11. The display will be open to the public, free of charge, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays.
