ALBANY - Bernice White Greene, 96, formally of Albany, died Monday October 14, 2013 in Snellville, GA.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday 2 PM at Kimbrell-Stern Funeral Directors with burial in Floral Memory Gardens.
Bernice was born on July 5, 1917 in Pansey, AL, at home on the family farm and was one of nine children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Greene; her son, Captain John E. Greene, USA ; her parents, Mr. & Mrs. O. D. White; sisters, Ester Knight and Eunice Ward; brothers O. D. White, Jr., Harold White, Rufus White and Leonard Joe White. She is survived by two sons, Mike Greene and his wife Patti, and Mark Greene. the lights of her life, two grandchildren, Andrew and Sara Kate. A sister and brother Lois Leverett and Richard White, a sister-in-law and her husband Annette and Arthur Chapman and two very good friends. Leslie Goodwin and Arloa Evans and a number of nieces and nephews.
Bernice and Carl built a house in Albany in the 1940’s, where she lived most of her life, raised her children, and was involved in her community. She worked at Mayfair Jewelers and Sears-Roebuck for many years before retiring. She was charter member of Sherwood Baptist Church and the Vota Vita Sunday School class She often spoke of her life growing up on the farm in Pansey. Her life prior to electricity reaching that rural community, fireplaces for heat, going to the well for water, outhouses, walking across a cow pasture to catch the school bus to Columbia, AL, working hard in the house and fields, and raising cows, hogs, mules, chickens, ducks, goats, dogs and cats. She especially recalled one ole mule named Laura, that let them play on, around, and under her, until Laura got tired of it and she would turn around and bite them. She had fond memories of the surrounding farmers and hands that worked on the farm. She grew up in the Union Springs Freewill Baptist Church in Pansey. Bernice was a gracious and sincerely good lady that had a wonderful life for 96 years, so no mourning, just fond memories.
