At least one dead in Tift County plane crash

TIFTON — A small plane crashed near Chula in Tift County Friday, killing the only person on board, Sheriff’s officals say. According to David Haire, information officer for the Tift County Sheriff’s Office, residents of a home near the crash site near 462 Red Oak Road heard the crash around 10 a.m. Friday and called 911, prompting Fire and EMS units to respond.

Haire said the Sheriff’s Office and other public safety agencies have preserved the scene for agents of the Federal Aviation Association coming from Atlanta and the National Transportation and Safety Board en route from New York.

“We took one look at the crash and determined it was a non-survivable situation,” Haire said. “but it falls to the FAA and NTSB to investigate.”

While FAA officials have not released the identity of the pilot, it was confirmed the plane was a Piper PA-28 aircraft departed from Merritt Island, Fla., with a destination of LaGrange-Callaway Airport in LaGrange.
