1.Week 7 High School Football Player of the Week Poll

Nominees for the Albany Herald Football Player of the Week Poll were Eric Burrows, kick returner/cornerback for Worth County High; Grey Lanier, full back, Deerfield-Windsor School; Jeff McKinney, running back, Crisp Academy, and Charles Stafford, quarterback, Monroe High. In a close vote, Lanier edged McKinney.

2. Freeman leaving Albany State

ALBANY — Albany State University President Everette Freeman has been hired as the new president of Community College of Denver (CCD) in Colorado. Colorado Community College System (CCCS) Director of Media and Legislative Communications Rhonda Bentz confirmed Freeman’s hiring early Wednesday morning.

3. TRS rejects Mosely contract

ALBANY — Dougherty County School System Interim Superintendent Butch Mosely on Tuesday agreed to work at 49 percent salary until July 1, 2014, after the Teacher Retirement System of Georgia (TRS) rejected the latest contract proposal from the DCSS and Mosely.

ALBANY — In a surprise move Friday, Dougherty County School Interim Superintendent Butch Mosely has named Eddie Johnson as principal at Albany Middle School. Johnson, the former principal at Sherwood Acres Elementary School, replaces Brandi Barrett, who was reassigned as an assistant principal At Sherwood Acres.

5. Gravitt steps down as Dougherty principal

ALBANY — The Dougherty County School Board has replaced Dougherty High School Principal Ryan Gravitt and named an interim principal to finish out the remainder of the school year. During a special called meeting Wednesday, the board voted 6-0 to remove Gravitt, a former principal at Tift County High and assistant principal at Monroe, and replace him on an interim basis with DCSS “principal coach” Robert McIntosh.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop Jr., D-Albany, has acknowledged he is currently undergoing chemotherapy after a cancerous tumor was found in his neck.

7. Woman thrown from car in accident

LEESBURG — An Albany woman was thrown from her vehicle during a one-car accident on U.S Highway 19 Tuesday,according to Georgia Patrol officials. According to Senior Trooper C.S. Jewell of Georgia Highway Patrol Post 40, Jody Ashley Stone was traveling south of Leesburg around 4:45 p.m. when her 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer left the highway and rolled one and a half times. Officials are investigating to see if she was texting on her cellphone at the time of the accident.

ALBANY — For the second time in just two days, an Albany institution of higher education has lost its president. In a stunning move early Friday afternoon, Peter Sireno has resigned immediately as president of Darton State College.
