Phoebe hosting health screenings for women

ALBANY — Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital will host its annual Women’s Health Conference Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at Phoebe HealthWorks, 311 Third Ave. This event is free and open to the public.

This year’s event is a celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month called “The Power of Pink”. The event will feature Dr. Shawnta Speer of the Phoebe Cancer Center as guest speaker. There will be also be spinning and Zumba presentations, a special tea time, information on hats and wraps, a discussion on healthy eating and nutrition, as well as door prizes.

Health screenings will be available beginning at 8 a.m., and will include height, weight, blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol (fasting required after midnight). Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

RiverQuarium, Thronateeska hosting Halloween celebrants

ALBANY — Halloween will get get started a little earlier this year as the The Flint RiverQuarium and the Thronateeska Heritage Center will be hosting their annual Tricks and Treats event from 5-8 p.m. today.

This year’s even theme will be a carnival, with both locations having a variety activities for adults and children of all ages.

Those attending can participate in activities such as a pumpkin toss and face painting at Thronateeska or making crafts at the RiverQuarium, among other things.

Woman robbed in shopping center parking lot

ALBANY — A 65-year-old woman was robbed at gunpoint Wednesday after shopping at Albany Mall, police officials say. Janice Hardy to officers of the Albany Police Department she had just a department store and entered her vehicle when a black male with a gun approached and demanded her purse.

Hardy described the suspect as being around 5-10 and between 20 and 28 years of age with short hair and dark clothes. The suspect fled the scene in a silver vehicle, Hardy told police. No arrests have been made.
