The Dougherty County Commission is looking for volunteers for county boards

ALBANY — The Dougherty County Commission is looking for a few good men … and women.
County Clerk Jawahn Ware released Monday a list of openings on county boards and committees that requires active participation by volunteers from the community.
“Having informed volunteers fill these positions only makes our community stronger,” Commission Chairman Jeff Sinyard said after the board’s Monday work session. “There are a number of people who ask what they can do to make a difference in their community. This is something they can do.
“It’s a very big deal for us to get involved citizens on these boards. It’s amazing how much difference one person with a good attitude can have on one of these boards. They can turn everything around.”
Ware said those interested in being part of the various boards have until Friday to submit a resume or letter of interest.
“Part of the county’s mission is to be good stewards and provide cost-effective service,” Ware said. “What better way to do that than to have involved citizens as part of the process?”
Among the county openings are positions on the HVAC Board, the Citizens Transportation Committee, the Development Authority, the Electrical Board, the Fire Code Board of Appeals, the Gas Board, the Hospital Authority, the Library Board, the Planning Commission, the Plumbing Board, the Retirement Committee, the Southwest Georgia Community Action Council, the Southwest Georgia Housing Task Force, the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission and the Stadium Authority.
“Recent activities have, I think, shown how vital these boards are to our community,” District 5 County Commissioner Gloria Gaines said. “We really need for some of our citizens who have a passion for the community to step up and get actively involved.”
Ware said interested people should submit a resume or letter of interest to the Dougherty County Board of Commissioners, P.O. Box 1827, Albany, Ga. 31702. Information about each of the various appointments is available at the www.dougherty.ga.us website. Click on the “citizen information” link.
Albany City Clerk Sonja Tolbert said Monday openings for city boards would be posted before the end of this week. Resumes and letters of intent will be due by Dec. 6.
