It’s a holiday week, so the list is abbreviated.
LABOR DAY: The unofficial end of summer is here with a long weekend that ends at midnight tonight. The holiday, which celebrates the working people of America, will see most business, government agencies and organizations closed. Retailers, however, will be busy. One government group that is out in force is law enforcement, so watch the speedometer on the way home. AAA said travel was expected to be by more than 4 percent from last year.
DOUGHERTY COMMISSION: The Dougherty County Commission normally meets on Monday, but won’t meet this week because of the Labor Day holiday. The board’s next scheduled meeting is a business session set for 10 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave.
PUMP PRICES: The groups that keep us up to date on gas pump prices will release their weekly reports a day later than normal because of the holiday.
ALBANY COMMISSION: The Albany City Commission will be back at work at 8:30 a.m. in room 120 of the Government Center, 222 Pine Ave. A special called business meeting of the commission will be conducted first to discuss the city’s 2014 group health plan. The agenda for the work session that follows includes discussion of an ordinance covering special events in the city that aren’t conducted by the city and early discussion of a possible model airplane ordinance that would prohibit the flying of model airplanes in residential neighborhoods, near hospitals and the airport, during athletic events and between one hour before sunset and one hour after sunrise.
BARROS ADOPTION: Barros, an 8-year-old working dog at Marine Corps Logistics Base-Albany, will be adopted one of his handlers, Cpl. Christopher Gurr, at a 2 p.m. ceremony at the base. Barros arrived at MCLB-Albany in December 2006 and has conducted several narcotics searches, to include random vehicle inspections and health and comfort searches in the barracks as well as local schools in Albany, among his other duties.
HOSPITAL BOARD: The Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital Board will meet at 11:45 a.m. in the Willson Board Room at the main hospital campus. No agenda for the meeting was available.
NEW EXHIBIT: An opening reception is 6 p.m.-8 p.m. for Pottery & Paintings, an exhibit by artist Kirby Gregory, at the Albany Area Arts Council, 215 N. Jackson St. The exhibition opens Thursday and continues through Sept. 27 at the council gallery.
LIFE PLAY: “Life Forever Changed,” a play about coping with the loss of loved ones, is at 6 p.m. at the Darton State College Theatre, 2400 Gillionville Road.
