HERALD FAB 5 POLL: Lee County debuts at No. 1

ALBANY — Is there any doubt who the team to beat in Southwest Georgia is this season?

There shouldn’t be after Lee County’s 55-6 blowout win vs. Dougherty on Friday, when the Trojans rode Dynamite Dozen quarterback Stephen Collier to its third-largest win since Dean Fabrizio took over the program in 2009.

Collier threw four TDs and ran for two more and said after the game that he probably should have thrown for three more scores.

That’s how good Lee County, which debuts today as No. 1 in the Herald’s Fab 5 Poll, thinks it can be this year as the Trojans try to finish a second straight season with a winning record for the first time in school history.

The Trojans will look to move to 2-0 on Friday when they travel to Hugh Mills to play the Albany High Indians, which begin the season as the No. 2 team in Southwest Georgia. The Indians, who won just two games all of last season, began 2013 with a victory Saturday with a 30-20 win against Class A Greenville after Dynamite Dozen linebacker Juwon Young shined on offense, too.

Young, who has committed to the University of Miami as a linebacker, led the Indians with four rushing touchdowns on Saturday, including a score with 1:59 left that sealed the win.

No. 3 Bainbridge was off last week, but the Bearcats began the season Aug. 23 with a 3-0 win against Florida powerhouse East Gadsden. Bainbridge got its lone points from a Daniel Provence 26-yard field goal in the third quarter and then stuffed East Gadsden on four straight goal-line rushes in the final minute to preserve the win. Bainbridge returns to action Friday at bitter rival Cairo, which narrowly defeated the Bearcats last season, 17-14.

Westover and Monroe start at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, after a pair of Week 1 losses to powerhouses Tift County and Brooks County. Class AAAAAA Tift County kept Westover out of the end zone in a 19-3 loss, while Monroe and reigning Herald Player of the Year Charles Stafford ran into one of the top teams in Class AA when Brooks rolled to a 48-14 win.

Westover goes back on the road Friday for a matchup against Jonesboro, while Monroe is at home again and will play Class A Wilcox County.
