GBI investigates Newton murder case

NEWTON — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is asking for public assistance in the recent death of William Land, thought to be about 87 years old, according to a press release by the GBI.

Land was found dead at his residence at 241 Clearlake Road, the release stated, when a “wellness check” was conducted by local law enforcement. On Sept. 10, Newton Police Chief Jesse Rivers requested assistance from the GBI field office in Sylvester in handling the case.

Land was transported to the GBI Crime lab in Macon, where an autopsy indicated foul play in his death, said Mark Pro, assistant special agent with the GBI. The specific indications for a ruling of homicide are not yet released, Pro said.

Anyone with information about the death of Land is asked to contact the Newton Police Department at (229) 734-5331 or GBI Sylvester at (229) 777-2080.
