ALBANY — A detective for the Dawson Police Department was arrested Thursday after on charged of stealing from Sears at the Albany Mall.

According Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, officers were dispatched to the store at 5:19 p.m. Thursday at the request of Sears loss prevention personnel.

According to the APD reports, Sears officials claim that Marcus LeMacks was caught on surveillance video removing items from the store and placing them in his car. LeMacks was interviewed by the loss prevention team at Sears, then arrested by officers of the APD and transported to the Dougherty County Jail, Banks said.

According to police, LeMack’s duty weapon and credentials were secured by officers of the APD and turned over to the Dawson Police Department. Banks said LeMack’s arrest is the result of a two-month investigation conducted by the Sears loss prevention department.

The APD is currently working with Lee County officials to secure warrants to search LeMack’s Lee County home to recover any stolen merchandise, Banks said.

Dawson Police Chief, Charlie Whitehead said LeMack has had no prior problems of impropriety since joining the Dawson force in June, 2009. He has been suspended without pay from the Dawson Police Department until a resolution to the situation, Whitehead said. According to Whitehead there will also be an administrative investigation conducted by DPD internal affairs.

“It’s unfortunate that this has happened,” Whitehead said. “He’s been an excellent drug investigator.”
