HERALD FAB 5 POLL: Lee, Seminole lead Fab 5 Poll after impressive wins

There’s Lee County and Seminole County, and then there’s everybody else in Southwest Georgia this season.

The Trojans and Indians are the only two unbeaten GHSA schools in Southwest Georgia after four weeks of football, and the duo remain in the top two spots in the Herald Fab 5 Poll.

Lee County had no problem routing an improved Morrow team on Friday and has now won 15 non-region games in a row in the regular season. The Trojans have one more non-region game (Friday vs. 2-2 Dodge County) before stepping into Region 1-AAAAA play.

Seminole County made the biggest statement in the area on Friday with a 42-12 whipping of then-No. 3 Pelham. The Indians wrapped up their non-region schedule with the win and are the team to beat in Region 1-A this season.

“Our kids were loose,” Ingram said after Friday night’s game. “We have a bunch of good kids. This is one of the least talented teams we’ve had since I’ve been here at Seminole. But the kids have bought into our system.”

Westover is the biggest mover in this week’s poll, jumping from No. 5 to No. 3 after a 26-13 win against Monroe. The Patriots’ two losses were to Lee County and Class AAAAAA Tift County, but Westover played well against the two powerhouses and was in both games until the fourth quarter.

The Patriots will have a crack at beating a South Georgia powerhouse this week when Cairo comes to town with its 24-game Region 1-AAAA winning streak.

Bainbridge and Pelham round out the poll despite each losing on Friday. Bainbridge fell to Class AAAAAA Westlake — which would have likely beaten any other team from Southwest Georgia outside of the Fab 5 Poll — and Pelham ran into Seminole County, which is playing as good as anybody in the state right now.

Bainbridge is off this week, but Pelham travels to Fitzgerald to play a team that beat the Hornets by 29 points last season.

A host of 2-2 teams (Crisp County, Americus-Sumter, Early County, Worth County, Terrell County) will be looking to break into the poll next week if Pelham can’t win its first Region 1-AA game since moving up to Class AA last season.

_________

Herald Fab 5 Poll

1. Lee County (4-0)

The Trojans had their fourth straight decisive win last week and ran their non-region winning streak in the regular season to 15 games. They finish up their non-region schedule this weekend.

Next: vs. Dodge County, 7:30 p.m. Friday

2. Seminole County (4-0)

The Indians, who were No. 3 in last week’s Class A state power rankings, handled a tough Pelham team with ease on Friday and get a bye week before entering Region 1-A play.

Next: at Terrell County, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4

3. Westover (2-2)

The Patriots are 2-2, but their losses were to No. 1 Lee County and Tift County, which could make some serious noise in the Class AAAAAA playoffs. They will look to snap Cairo’s 24-game region winning streak on Friday.

Next: vs. Cairo, 7:30 p.m. Friday

4. Bainbridge (2-2)

The Bearcats were shut out for the second time this season, but they lost to a Class AAAAAA Westlake team that would have given anybody in Southwest Georgia problems.

Next: vs. Thomas County Central, 8 p.m. Oct. 4

5. Pelham (3-1)

Even after Friday’s loss to Seminole, the Hornets are still leading all of Class AA in rushing and have outscored opponents 149-68 this season.

Next: vs. at Fitzgerald, 7:30 p.m. Friday
