Town hall to discuss 'silent killer'

ALBANY — Ward I Albany City Commissioner Jon Howard encouraged citizens from throughout the city to attend his regular town hall meeting Saturday at the District 4 Police Precinct building at 1721 E. Oglethorpe Blvd. “for their own good.”

Registered Nurse Heather O’Connor will conduct the meeting and discuss the dangers that diabetes poses for the community.

“Diabetes has become a silent killer in our country and in our community,” Howard said. “The disease has increased so dramatically in Southwest Georgia, as many as 15 to 16 percent of the people in our community have diabetes. And what’s scary is that a lot of people don’t even know it, and they don’t find out sometimes until it’s too late.”

Howard said O’Connor would talk with event participants about the dangers and symptoms of diabetes and would supply handouts for attendees.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will start Saturday at 10 a.m.
