BAINBRIDGE - Carl R. “Dick” Griffin, 67, of Blakely, GA, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at Phoebe Putney Hospital’s North Campus.

The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 7, 2014 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Robin Jumper and Rev. Paul Medley officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 pm on Monday, April 7, 2014 at First Baptist Church. Mr. Griffin was born December 1, 1946 in Americus, GA, the son of Ira Hoke Griffin and Rubye Sturdivant Griffin. He was a graduate of Americus High School, Class of 1964, and attended Georgia Southwestern where he earned a Masters degree. Dick was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member and deacon at First Baptist Church in Bainbridge, and active at First Baptist Church in Blakely.

Dick was an educator, and coached football and girls basketball for over 40 years. At Bainbridge High School, he served as assistant athletic director and head of the social studies department, and was on the staff of the 1982 state championship team. He also worked with the counties of Early, Randolph, Turner, and Dooly . Coach Griffin retired from the Miller County School System in 2013. Not one for idle time, he enjoyed his time working with local farmers scouting cotton from 1993 to 2005.

Survivors include his wife, Mary McFay Griffin; children, Judy Parker and her husband, Skeeter, of Nashville, GA and Cleve McFay and wife, Jill of Blakely, GA; grandchildren, Bennett and Thomas McFay of Blakely, GA, and Abbey McFay of Ootlewah, TN; sister, Charlotte Lee of Floyds Knob, IN; sister-in-law, Donny Griffin of Memphis, TN; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Bush Griffin; and siblings, Danny Griffin and Laura Bracy.
