ALBANY — Dougherty and Lee counties will host their 20th annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life April 25 and 26 at Albany Exchange Club Fairgrounds.

The Relay for Life is held each year to honor and remember those touched by cancer and to raise funds to help fight the disease. Opening ceremonies are planned at 6 p.m. on April 25 with a luminaria ceremony scheduled for approximately 9 p.m.

Groups of all types unite to raise funds through sponsorships and spend the night at the Relay for Life event. Many of the participants take turns walking a track throughout the night to show their support.

Luminaries will be placed around the track in honor and in memory of those touched by cancer. For each luminary purchased, the survivors name will be read aloud during the ceremony. Luminaria bags can be purchased for as little as $5 each. The bags are placed around the walking track. A tribute torch can be purchased for $100 in honor of or in memory of someone.

Glow balloons can be purchased for $20. The balloons will be released during the luminaria ceremony.

Luminarias may be purchased by going online at www.relayforlife.org/doughertyleega* or by visiting the American Cancer Society office at 323 Pine Ave., Suite 100. The deadline for purchasing a luminaria is April 18.
