Let’s meetup! Looking to meet new people or find fellowship with others who share your particular interest? If so, I can recommend a social networking site that allows you to do just that.

Allow me introduce you to the online portal Meetup.com.

This site facilitates local group gatherings by allowing members to find and join groups brought together by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, health, pets, careers, cooking, rollerblading, ping pong or checkers. Whatever your hobby — the groups are endless.

While this social networking site is extremely popular in larger cities, it has been slow to catch on in the Albany area. To see how the groups are utilized in larger cities you only have to go to Meetup.com and type in any large city name to get a sense of the multitude of groups that are offered. Atlanta, Tallahassee, and, Washington DC, are a few examples.

The following was taken from the Meetup.com website:

Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities. And their mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.

Considering I am impassioned about being kinder and gentler to the earth and living a vegan lifestyle, as I have been for the last twenty years, I have started a group that centers on a plant-based diet made up of fresh unprocessed foods. In my kitchen I grow sprouts, wheat grass, make vegan cheeses, raw foods, nut milks, crazy desserts and, well, you get the idea. This is my thing and I look forward to meeting others that are also looking for fellowship or want to learn about this way of life.

If you are interested in joining this group go to Meetup.com, enter one of our local zip codes, and you will find my group “Let’s Dish Vegan Meetup of SW Georgia.” There are a few other groups that might be of interest to you, or perhaps you would consider starting a group of your own. Let your imagination and passion lead the way.

The first Meetup for “Let’s Dish Vegan Style” will be April 26 from 1-3 p.m. at my residence in Leesburg. A specific location will be give to members of the group. Come celebrate with us and get to know fellow members with an afternoon potluck. Bring a vegan dish to share as well as ideas you would like to explore at future meetups. Perhaps you would be interested in a theme for a meetup or it could be you would like to learn about plant-based diets and your health. Maybe you are interested in adding book discussion or watching and discussing a health-based documentary. All ideas, as well as all Vegans, Vegetarians and Omnivores are welcome to join.
