Gunman shows up too late at store

Gunman who police think was out to rob store finds it closed for the night

ALBANY — An unidentified gunman found his entry to the BP station at 1817 N. Slappey Blvd. Tuesday had been foiled because the store was already closed for the night.

Officers with the Albany Police Department were dispatched to convenience store and gas station at 10:46 p.m. because of reports that a lone man with a gun in his hand had been shaking the doors, trying to enter the business, officials said. The station was closed at the time.

When the gunman, described as a tall, slender black male dressed in a long-sleeved blue shirt, was unable to gain entry to the business, he ran away, officials say.

Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the APD, said officers have canvassed the area in search of the individual, who is expected to be charged with aggravated assault in connection with the robbery attempt.
