ALBANY — JP Bernard needed just 82 pitches to help Albany State jump start its doubleheader against Paine College Saturday afternoon at Hamp Smith Stadium.

Ryan Latner and the Rams’ offense did the rest. Latner went 3-for-3 with a double and helped Albany State to a 4-2 victory in the first game of an SIAC doubleheader.

Then, the Rams overcame a one-run deficit in the second game, scoring four runs in the fifth inning to cruise to a 6-2 victory and a sweep.

Albany State (27-15, 19-0 SIAC) will go for its 20th conference victory this afternoon when they meet Paine in the SIAC finale at 1 p.m.

Joseph Virgo’s pinch-hit double in the fifth inning helped ASU overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Andrew Bacon earned the victory in the second game to improve to 7-3 on the season, while Theo Tramontana earned the save.

The Rams made the most of their six hits in Game 2.

Bernard sparkled in the first contest, allowing just three hits to run his record to 7-3.

DARTON SOFTBALL SWEEPS: Darton State College swept a doubleheader at Georgia Perimeter College in Covington on Saturday. The Lady Cavaliers improved to 36-10 overall and 13-1 in conference play.

Behind pitcher Summer Wright, Darton scored a 5-0 shutout in the first game of the doubleheader. Wright allowed just two hits and struck out five to win her 12th game of the season.

Darton blew the game open in the fourth inning when Bree Wells’ two-out single plated two runs.

Jordan Allen finished the game two-for-four with two RBIs and a double, while Melissa Dearth went two-for-three with a double.

In the second game, pitcher Tiffany Bishop picked up her 10th victory of the season as the Lady Cavaliers earned a 7-3 victory.

Emily Church went two-for-four with a pair of RBIs, while Dearth also went two-for-four. Allen finished one-for-three with a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Darton will travel to Barnesville for a doubleheader on Tuesday in their final road trip of the regular season. The Lady Cavaliers will play host to Middle Georgia Friday in a doubleheader before closing out the season Saturday at home against Andrew College.
