DUANE 'BANJO' DAVIS: Government officials are short on common sense

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Why government officials do what they do can be befuddling

I think that the term “common sense” refers to sound practical judgment, and I think that many in our government do not possess sound practical judgment, as evidenced by some recent actions that cause me to think such a thought!

The attorney general of the United States has proposed or is about to initiate a program whereby federal prisoners who have served 10 years of their sentences for a nonviolent crime can be released under some conditions. One nonviolent crime is dealing in illegal drugs. Local and state governments know that such an offender, if tried and convicted in a state court, will most likely be on the streets in a short time. Not so with the federal courts, where a sentence is a sentence and most of it must be served. It does not make sense that releasing a person who is serving a lengthy sentence for such a crime would even be considered before completing the sentence.

I just read an article that the Wood County, W. Va., school officials have removed a Bible verse from the Parkersburg South High School gymnasium and the school wrestling team’s website. The verse is Philippians 4:13, which reads, “I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me.”

Then I also just read that in Fair Lawn, N.J., town officials have halted a repair project on a water tower because a crow has built a nest on it. The cost of the wait for the crows to hatch and fly away is estimated to be $20,000.

And on top of all that, we have read that the Internal Revenue Service has monetarily rewarded employees — for some who owe back income taxes to the tune of a whole lot of money, and for some who have been counseled for inefficiency or shortcomings in performance. These rewards total several million dollars.

Now, is there anything in these four situations that would lead anyone to even consider, “Wow, some really intelligent people have come up with these things”?
