Two Southwest Georgians complete Navy basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

These Southwest Georgians recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, ill.

During the eight-week program, recruits complete a variety of training, including classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations,” an exercise that gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet.

Completing the basic training were:

— Navy Seaman Apprentice Takeria D. Jones, daughter of Gerrick Jones, of Savannah, and Lakeshia N. Arnold, of Albany. Jones is a 2013 graduate of Dougherty Comprehensive High School of Albany, Ga.

— Navy Seaman Michael L. Coney Jr., son of Michael L. Coney, of Tifton, and Tekeber A. Sims, of Albany. Coney is a 2010 graduate of Tift County High School, Tifton.
