Roger William Michel
JASPER-Roger William Michel, 80, of Big Canoe, passed away at his home on Friday, August 8, 2014 after a brief illness. Mr. Michel was born on September 15, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to Margaret and William G. Michel. The family later moved to Michigan. Roger graduated from Three Rivers High School in Three Rivers, Michigan then joined the U. S. Navy retiring as a reservist. During his service time Roger’s personal decorations included Meritorious unit Commendation Ribbon; Navy “E” Ribbon; Good Conduct Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; United Nation Medal; Expert Pistol Medal; and Expert Rifleman Medal.
Following his active duty service, Mr. Michel was employed by Illinois Bell. In 1965, shortly after meeting his future wife, Mr. Michel moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he continued his work with the Bell System. On February 4, 1967 Mr. Michel married Brenda Shaw Anderson of East Point, GA. In the seventies, the two moved to Fayetteville, Georgia where they lived for 24 years. Beginning with a part time home in 1992, Brenda and Roger made Big Canoe, Georgia their permanent residence in 1997.
Roger Michel was an avid collector and enjoyed vintage cars. During the 1980’s Roger amassed an extensive collection of rare and vintage beer cans and for years he was an active member of the Beer Can Collectors of America. Roger always had a new and/or different vehicle in his garage. He and Brenda often participated in car shows and enjoyed other collector events. During their time in Fayetteville, Roger became licensed as a remodeler. He was known to be quite meticulous in his work, paying attention to detail and always had a project in progress.
Roger loved his home in the North Georgia Mountains and was not one to stand still for long even in his retirement. Roger delighted in the lake and outdoors. Early on, he was a member of the Big Canoe Emergency Rescue Team and enjoyed seven years as a Marina Marshall. Throughout his years in Big Canoe, Roger was known for his quick wit and sense of humor; and as a hard worker and loyal friend.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his wife of forty-eight years, Brenda Anderson Michel, their dear and special friends, Linda and Reed Dickerson of Newnan, his sister-in-law, Jeanneen Anderson Cowart of Arlington; his niece, Melanie Cowart Collier of Cartersville; his nephew, Jay Cowart and his wife Sabra of Albany; great-nieces, Cara Collier and Anna Cowart; and great-nephews, Michael Collier and Jase Cowart.
Services will be held Monday, August 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Big Canoe Chapel with the Reverend Len Walker officiating.
