Driver injured in Albany one-car accident

Driver hospitalized after north Albany accident

ALBANY — A driver on Slappey Boulevard was injured Friday when his vehicle crashed into two poles, Albany Police Department officials say.

Phyllis Banks, spokeswoman for the Albany Police Department, said Donald Phelps Jr., 32, was traveling south on North Slappey Boulevard around 9: 55 a.m. when the 2008 Kia Rondo he was driving veered into the northbound lane of traffic. The Kia left the roadway near the intersection of Palmyra Road, officials say, struck the curb and crashed into both a utility pole and traffic light pole before coming to a stop.

Officials say the impact of the Kia ignited a fire within the vehicle, which arriving officers of the APD were able to extinguish. Shortly afterward, firefighters of the Albany Fire Department arrived and extricated Phelps from the vehicle, Banks said.

Banks said the victim was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Phelps’ condition has not yet been released.
