Betty Jean Brown McClain

ALBANY – Mrs. Betty Jean Brown McClain was born in Mitchell County (Flint Community), Georgia on October 24, 1934, to the late Adell Williams Brown and George McClinton Brown.

She attended the public schools of Mitchell County and was a majorette in high school.

At an early age, Betty Jean accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was baptized and received the “right hand of fellowship” into the body of the St. Mary Baptist Church.

On June 2, 1956, she was united in holy matrimony to Alton McClain. To this union, four children were born – Sherita, Richard, Alton, Herman and Charles. In 1966, Betty and Alton moved their family to Newark, New Jersey in quest of employment that would better serve their family. They later moved to Detroit Michigan where they lived for an extended period of time. In 1996 they had a longing for home and moved back to Albany, Georgia.

On Saturday, August 23, 2014, she departed this earthly life at her home. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton McClain; and six siblings, Pauline Smith, Jeraline Smiley, Lula Gray, Lucille Riggins, James Brown and Sonny Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Sherita (Jeff) Ross of Albany, Georgia; four sons, Richard Stewart McClain of Winter Haven, Florida, Alton McClain, Jr. of Irvington, New Jersey, Herman (Mickey) McClain of Albany, Georgia, and Charles McClain of Detroit, Michigan; four sisters, Rosetta (Calvin) Thomas and Mollie Mae Jess both of Albany, Georgia, and Florrie Mae Pruitt and Doris (Willie D.) Sheppard both of Camilla, Georgia; 11 grandchildren, Tera, Latoya, Richard, Isaiah, Nakita, Travis, Marya, Ashley, Kylenza, Marquis, and Quenzell; 14 great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Rev. Joe D. McClain of Newark, New Jersey; one sister-in-law, Cora Lakes of Detroit, Michigan; a special niece that she help raise, Beverly McClain; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 2:30 PM at saint Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Camilla, Georgia. Bishop T. Tremaine Hill will officiate. Interment will follow in the Oakview Cemetery in Camilla. Visitation will be held today, Friday, August 29, 2014 from 9:00AM until 8:30PM at M. L. King Southside Chapel, 1908 M. L. King, Jr. Drive. The family will receive friends at 1010 West Fourth Avenue.
