Monroe students bring home awards in foreign-language contest
Zamaria Shead and Anthony Shead, brother and sister, from Monroe Comprehensive High School participated in the Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) Spoken Language Contest recently. This event was hosted by Deerfield-Windsor School and the contest was open to the students of those teachers who are members of FLAG. Approximately one hundred contestants participated in the various competitions of Spanish, French, Latin, Japanese, German and other languages at all levels. Zamaria won Superior (1st place) and Anthony won Notable (3rd place) in Spanish 1.
Lincoln Student Wins Young Citizenship Award
Lincoln Elementary Magnet student Joshua Pratt is the recipient of the Young Citizenship Award. It was presented to him by Barry Davis of the Exchange Club of Albany. The High Honors student competed for the honor with the public and private schools in the surrounding area after being nominated by his teachers.
Pratt is a fifth grade student who has maintained his High Honors rating for the entire school year and has been accepted into the gifted program at Robert Cross Middle Magnet School. He won first place in the 4H County Achievement in the history category. In his spare time, he is a blue-white stripe belt and a member of a karate competition team.
Westover students take on litter with Stash-the-Trash
Dougherty County School System Community Based Instruction, Youth Apprenticeship, Workforce Investment Act and Career Technology Agricultural Education Programs Participated Collaboratively with Stash-the-Trash Community Project.
Students from CBI, YAP, WIA and CTAE participated in Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful Stash-the-Trash community service project. This project allowed students to evaluate their attitudes and behavior toward littering. Students developed an appreciation for the beautification of the community.
Live Oak Wins Cash in Telephone Recycling Project
Live Oak Elementary School’s principal Laytona Stephenson was presented with a $400 check by Judy Bowles of Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful, for earning third place in the Telephone Book Recycling project. Tomeka Warren, first grade teacher organized the efforts for students, parents, and staff to make their donations to the cause sponsored by Keep Albany-Dougherty Beautiful.
Dougherty High students help with Stash the Trash
Future Business Leaders of America and CTI department participated in the Keep Albany Dougherty Beautiful annual Stash-the-Trash/Great American Cleanup litter pick-up event late last month. The group participated in the event’s kickoff luncheon which was held at the Albany Civic Center in February. The event is an awareness activity that is meant to focus our community’s attention on how important the visual appearance of our community is to our citizen’s. The student groups participate in the event annually as a community service project. FBLA members gain community service hours which allows them to compete for FBLA awards, as well as meet the requirements for scholarships and admission to colleges/universities. The coordinators of the event were FBLA Adviser D. Lewis and T. Canty.
Dougherty students partner with local business
Te’Leigh Peavy, business owner of Peavy Associates and member of the DCHS Business Management and Administration (BMA) Advisory Committee, visited the Introduction to Business and Technology classes to present a workshop on starting a business. Peavy presented an overview on how she started her own business by planning her career goal in high school, working in industry to gain experience and hard work.
The students were given a homework assignment in which they will create a business idea to start a business. Peavy has scheduled a return back to the classes to advise the students on their business idea. She holds the position as secretary on DCHS business advisory committee.
Dougherty students meet CTAE committee members
Nautica Hadley, president of DCHS Future Business Leaders of America, and ROTC Cadet Major Jarard Jackson presented at the biannual DCHS CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) Advisory Committee meeting at Dougherty Comprehensive High School last month.
Activities included presentations of all DCHS CTAE programs, curriculum updates, and discussions of priorities for next school term. The DCHS CTAE advisory committee meets twice a year.
Lake Park NAC wins first place at state competition
The Lake Park Nutrition Advisory Council was recently awarded first place in the state of Georgia. The NAC consists of students selected at the beginning of the school year based on essays they wrote about why they wanted to be on the NAC Team. To win this award you have to be involved in promoting, teaching about, and increasing student participation in healthy school meals.
The state scores the NAC teams of all the schools across the state and looks at the involvement in Lunch and Breakfast Week, teaching gardens, and community involvement along with other important criteria.
Robert A. Cross joins with U.S. Air Force band for concert
Robert A. Cross Middle School Music Department hosted a concert which featured members of the United States Air Force Band of the West out of San Antonio, Texas. The Saxophone Quartet featured TSgt. Miles Hudlow, MSgt. Kenny Drefke, SrA. Mary Gant, and MSgt. Dwight Wiest. Also featured on the program was the Albany State University Saxophone Quartet and its members Terry Andrews, James Worthy, Keith George III, and Isaac Crosslen. Worthy and Andrews are currently student teaching at Robert A. Cross Middle School and Albany High School, respectively.
Robert Cross students selected for region Honor Band at VSU
Three Robert A. Cross Band students were selected to participate in the South Georgia Region Honor Band last month. Students were selected based on their District and All-State auditions scores. The students selected represent the entire South Georgia region of the state, from Macon south and St. Mary’s to Savannah. The students representing Robert Cross are Kryshondra Powell, trombone, Emmanual Bradford, tube, and Amari Marsh, clarinet.
