PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Albany boys overcome Monroe

Indians lock up No. 4 seed in Region 1-AAAA Tournament with victory.

ALBANY - Tyler Cheese scored 22 points and Dezmond Newberry added 20 as Albany High topped Monroe for the second time this season with a 69-63 victory in the late game Friday night at Darton State College.

The victory was a big one for the Indians (14-7 overall, 8-6 Region 1-AAAA), who locked up the No. 4 seed in the region tournament that begins next week.

Malik Dungee-Ali added 14 points.

Albany overcame red-hot shooting from Monroe (12-8, 6-7), then grabbed the lead and held on down the stretch.

“They hit us pretty strong in that first quarter,” Albny coach Archie Chatmon said. “It was fight uphill the rest of the way, but or kids did a good job of responding.”

The Tornadoes were led by Jordan Tyson’s 14 points.

Monroe plays its final regular-season game tonight when it plays host to Worth County in a key region game at 7:30 p.m.

DEERFIELD-WINDSOR BOYS 61, VALWOOD 42: Deerfield-Windsor used a pair of solid offensive performance from Chandler Matthews and Christian Wallace to pound Valwood Friday night.

Matthews finished with 14 points, while Wallace added 13 in the victory. Justin Eady finished with just eight points but grabbed eight rebounds.

The Knights will play host to Brookwood today in a makeup game. The boys game will follow the girls contest, which begins at 4:30 p.m.

SHERWOOD CHRISTIAN BOYS 77, SOUTHWEST GEORGIA 59: Sherwood Christian had four players finish in double figures in a key region victory over Southwest Georgia.

Chris Thomas led the way with 20 points, while Greg Elder added 16. Juwan Henderson and Larrece Kelley added 12 points apiece as the Eagles improved to 17-7 on the season.

SEMINOLE COUNTY 83, MILLER COUNTY 40: The Indians had five players finish in double-figure scoring to help Seminole County improve to 18-2 on the season.

Jordan Harris led the way with 22 points, while Anfernee King added 18. Jahmyka Pearson and Jamarcus Gray scored 11 points each, while Dewayne Samson finished with 10.

Seminole plays host to Bainbridge in its regular-season finale tonight.

RANDOLPH-CLAY BOYS 82, WEBSTER COUNTY 55: The Red Devils were paced by a pair of double-figure scorers in a victory over Webster County.

Kevin Brown and Trahmad Wiggins added 10 points apiece to pace Randolph-Clay, who travels to meet Calhoun County in the regular-season finale tonight. The game will match two of the top five teams in the Albany Herald’s Fab 5 Poll. The game begins at 7:30 p.m.

CALHOUN COUNTY 67, STEWART COUNTY 45: The Herald No. 4 Cougars rolled to a big win over Stewart County in Lumpkin. Quenton Taylor led the way with 15 points, while Sherrod Williams and Deante Scott added 11 and nine points respectively.

Calhoun County improved to 21-1 overall and 10-1 in Region 1-A play.

CAIRO BOYS 60, BAINBRIDGE 55: Cairo scored a big nonregion victory over Bainbridge High. Despite 17 points from Herald Super 6er Tyree Crump, the Bearcats couldn’t overcome Cairo. Franklin Bryant and Devonte Jones scored 11 points each, while Dominique Douglas added 10.

WESTWOOD BOYS 67, TERRELL ACADEMY 66: Westwood handed Terrell Academy its first region loss of the season. Jamie Davis led the Wildcats with 28 points, while Collier Bryant added 23.

Terrell (12-7, 4-1 region) got 38 points from Coner Walsh. Gable Freeman added 14 for the Eagles.

SHERWOOD CHRISTIAN GIRLS 57, SOUTHWEST GEORGIA 45: Michaela Hudson scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Sherwood Christian to a key Region 3-AA victory at Southwest Georgia.

Key’yada Thomas added 12 points and nine assists, while Victoria Davidson added 11 points and six rebounds to help the Lady Eagles improve to 14-9 and 4-2 in region play.

Southwest Georgia Academy was led by Baylee Everson’s 17 points.

DEERFIELD-WINDSOR GIRLS 63, VALWOOD 33: Deerfield-Windsor improved to 9-11 on the season, scoring a win over Valwood.

The Lady Knights were led by Libby Greene’s 12 points and five steals. Kelsey King added nine points, while Gabby Burt finished with eight points, six rebounds and seven steals.

MONROE GIRLS 51, ALBANY 29: Keshundra Price scored 19 points to lead Monroe to a 51-29 victory over Albany High Friday night at Darton State College. It was the 12th straight victory and 20th win of the season for Monroe.

The Lady Tornadoes, who also saw Lynsey Washington score in double figures with 10 points, led throughout the game in a relatively easy win. Cekeya Mack had eight points and Treasure Frazier finished with seven points.

Albany’s leading scorer was China Marcus with nine points, while Julyssa Brown had eight points and Alondra Calhoun contributed six points.

Monroe will play its last game tonight when it plays host to Worth County.

WESTWOOD GIRLS 64, TERRELL ACADEMY 30: Westwood won its 15th game of the season by doubling-up on Terrell Academy.

The Lady Wildcats (15-1, 5-0 region) were led by Rachel Harrell’s 28 points. Callie Smith added nine and Morgan Singleton added eight.

Terrell Academy was led by Marilauren Farr’s 20 points.

RANDOLPH-CLAY GIRLS 62, WEBSTER COUNTY 46: Kobi Thornton scored 22 points to lead the Randolph-Clay girls to a victory over Webster County.

Shanice Jackson added 16 for the Lady Red Devils, who improved to 19-4 and 11-0 in Region 1-A play. They can close out the season with a perfect region record if they can top Calhoun County tonight in Edison in their regular-season finale.
