MARIANNA, Fla. — In a preseason interview, first-year Darton softball coach Eric Neel said he believed his Lady Cavs would be “sneaky good” this season.
After Sunday’s victories against nationally ranked No. 8 Chipola College and No. 14 Gulf Coast State College, the Lady Cavs might not be sneaking up on any more opponents.
Stretching their winning streak to five games, the Lady Cavs (5-1) dominated Gulf Coast, 7-2, and then used a Bree Wells two-run double to defeat Chipola, 2-1.
Darton managed just two hits against Chipola, but Wells made hers count with a third-inning double that scored Sierra Newman and Nicole McInerney to give the Lady Cavs a 2-0 lead. Starting pitcher Tiffany Bishop got the win after throwing 5 1/3 innings and allowing six hits and one run, while Sommar Wright picked up the save after not allowing a hit in the final 1 2/3 innings.
In Darton’s opener against Gulf Coast, Wells was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two stolen bases, while Newman, Jordan Allen and Jostlyn Higgerson each added two hits. Emily Church, who had Darton’s only other hit against Chipola, didn’t have a hit against GCSC but still stole a game-high four bases.
Savannah Carlisle threw a complete game for the Lady Cavs, allowing nine hits, no walks and two runs.
Darton plays again today in a double header against Georgia Military College.
