LEESBURG — Matthew Kelley and Susan Turner have been chosen as Lee County’s STAR Student and Teacher of the Year, respectively.
Kelley and Turner were honored Tuesday at the annual Eggs and Issues breakfast which was conducted by the Lee County Chamber of Commerce. Kelley was named the STAR Student and picked Turner as his STAR Teacher. She taught him Advanced Placement Human Geography.
Kelley was selected on the basis of his SAT scores during one test administration, class standing and scholastic averages. The annual competition statewide is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Foundation, Georgia Chamber of Commerce and Georgia Department of Education. Locally, the program Tuesday was sponsored by Darton State College, Colony Bank and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Kelley is a senior at Lee County High School. He is the son of Gary and Kathleen Kelley of Lee County. He plans to attend Georgia Tech.
Kelley and Turner will now advance to regional and possible state competition.
Guest speaker at the Eggs and Issues breakfast was Sylvia Vann, Lee County School Board chairperson.
