Americus man killed in Sumter County crash

Man dies after motorcycle collides with pickup Saturday evening

AMERICUS — The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) is currently investigating a crash in Sumter County that resulted in one fatality over the weekend.

Senior Trooper William Cope of SCRT said the accident took place at the intersection of Georgia Highway 27 and Georgia State Route 3 at around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The two drivers involved were William “Sam” Singletary, 47, of Americus and Gregory Leonard, 53, of Roswell. Singletary was traveling on a motorcycle westward from Spring Street crossing State route 3 while Leonard was turning left in a pick-up truck from Georgia 27 when the two vehicles collided, the trooper said.

Singletary was transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Cope said.

Witnesses are being sought piece together exactly what happened, the trooper said. In the meantime, officials are collecting surveillance video from nearby stores and are awaiting a report from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Cope said Leonard is facing a driving under the influence charge, with other charges possible.

The mission of SCRT, the Georgia Department of Public Safety website says, is to provide a means by which fatal crashes can be investigated thoroughly by specially trained investigators. It has five teams of investigators stationed throughout the state to assist field troopers with fatal crashes.
